Valve Marketing VP: The PC is no longer a Viable Platform

200°
320w ago - The PC is all about casual gaming. The PC market is dying. We've heard it all before, and so has Valve's Marketing VP Doug Lombardi.

What does Valve think of the PC Gaming Alliance? Are they as tired of the PC gaming "problem" as we are? What is at the root of the issue, anyway?

Shack: Do you guys ever get tired of the same old "PC Gaming Is Dying" stories?

Doug Lombardi: I mean, I think, we sort of laugh at it. Because we've been wildly successful--we're very fortunate, you know. Our games have all done really, really well, Steam has taken off and become this whole other business for us, Valve has never been in better shape--and yet everybody is talking about how in the PC world, the sky is falling.

And we're like, we've been doing this for 10 years now--actually 12 years since the company started, 10 years since the first game came out--and we've never been in better shape, financially or otherwise. The company is over 160 people now--it was 20 people when we shipped Half-Life. We've got multiple projects going--we were always a one-project-at-a-time group.

We don't understand why that story gets traction over time. I think people have finally started to clue in to the fact--there was a story last week where people finally looked at the online subscription...

Team Fortress 2 online petition against EA

100°
325w ago - Team Fortress 2, which was included in the Orange Box, was released last year. It already had its fair share of problems on the day of release, however it seems that the game still has a lot of online issues. Yesterday an angry gamer apparently couldn't take it anymore and started a petition regarding the problems.

The issues that are listed in the petition (which are quite a lot) are of the PS3 version. Which, of course, comes as no surprise, seeing as how EA constantly keeps complaining about working with the next-generation console of Sony.

The petition is linked above, and I thought it should also be shared here. We also need to support our fellow gamers that are in need. EA has ruined the online experience.. +300 signatures in last 24 hours, the petition is starting pretty well. Link to petition's user blog is here.

Good day!

Portal 2 Confirmed on X-Play!

300°
333w ago - On tonight's episode of X-Play, lead designer for Portal, Kimberly Swift, confirmed that there will be a Portal 2.

This is pretty much a given as Doug Lombardi, Valve's Director of Marketing, had previously stated that "more Portal is definitely on the way." However, until now we weren't sure if this would be in the form of a direct sequel or possibly downloadable content.

Well, now we know. Check out the video in the article above for the confirmation.

Valve "Deactivating" Customers Who Bought "Orange Box" Internationally

50°
350w ago - According to reader Todd, there are quite a few customers are finding their "Orange Box" games have been deactivated by Valve because they bought them from a seller that wasn't authorized to do business with US customers.

The seller made the mistake, but the gamers are paying the price. Todd says:

This complaint is about Valve, a PC video game company which makes games like Half-Life 2. This effects many thousands of customers. They recently released a product called the "Orange Box", which is a bunch of games. All their products are activated online via unique serial numbers through the Steam service.

Many of us bought the product (and hence, the serial numbers) legitimately online via well known international game stores, as they sell them significantly cheaper than American stores.

We were able to activate the products without a problem. One week later, Valve, via the Steam program, inactivated all Orange Box games (after they had already been active for some time), stating that they are in the "incorrect territory." There was no warning or anything, just completely inactivated. The thread that was started on www.valve.com has been removed by the operators there.

I think this is absolutely reprehensible customer care. We paid for our products, and they just go and...

Play Team Fortress 2 Against Valve on Friday

50°
351w ago - The folks at Valve? Why, they're the kind of guys you can just kick back with. Relax. Have a beer. Frag. You'll get the opportunity to do at least one of those things this Friday, as the company announced an open invitation for Team Fortress 2 players to take on the minds behind The Orange Box.

This Friday, October 19, from 3-7:00PM PST (6-10 EST), those with Gold subscriptions can take on the team and chat with them about tips and strategies for the game. To participate seems simple enough; just add the following Gamertags to your friends list:

  • gamewithdev1 (Matt W.- Level Designer)
  • ValveArtist1 (Matthew S. - Artist)
  • ValveAnim (Matthew R. - Animator)
  • ValveProg1 (Vitaliy - Programmer)
  • ValveProg2 (Adrian - Programmer)
  • ValveProg3 (Kerry - Programmer)
  • ValveProg4 (Robin - Programmer)
  • ValveProg5 (Jim - Programmer)
  • ValveLevelDes2 (Dave - Level Designer)
  • ValveArtist2 (Nick - Artist)
  • ValveLevelDes3 (Scott - Level Designer)
  • ValveProg6 (David - Programmer)
  • ValveWriter (Chet - Writer)

One might question the sanity of putting a Gamertag publicly out there. Luckily, most of these seem fairly generic and are probably set up for occasions such as this one. Just add the tags...
