Can't Make it to E3? Try the Uncharted 2 Online Hunt Instead!

100°
269w ago - Tonight Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has announced news of an Uncharted 2 Online Hunt contest for those unable to attend [Register or Login to view links].

To quote: As you're reading this, your PlayStation.Blog team is currently neck deep in tamales at our E3 Meet-up.

As attendees showed up, we not only invited the first 100 into our press conference, we also presented the first 200 with an Uncharted 2 Nathan Drake-style long-sleeve shirt, perfect for a half-tuck.

While I'm sure we're having a lot of fun (we'll report back soon, with pics), we don't want those of you who couldn't make it to feel left out.

While we were planning this meetup, we decided to "over order" the schwag: extra Uncharted 2 beta codes, extra shirts, and of course, extra schwag bags. Whoops!

Here's how we're going to give them out to you, our dear readers:

On Friday (9am Pacific), we're going to ask a question about Uncharted 2. Be one of the first 300 to answer it, and you win. Simple!

Actually, it's not *that* simple - because that question isn't really easy. So here's what you're going to want to do to have a chance: This Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 9am we'll be asking some easier-to-solve Uncharted...

Canadian Game Industry Seeks to Jail Pirates, Targets Mod-chips

400°
274w ago - The [Register or Login to view links] is calling for tougher copyright laws in the country, including jail time for pirates and the criminalization of mod-chips.

To quote: A bill modeled after the [Register or Login to view links] in the U.S. was introduced in Canada last year but died before it could be passed when the government called an election.

Grassroots resistance to the bill was strong, with critics claiming it was overly restrictive and would leave individual citizens exposed to huge fines. Nonetheless, Parr called for similar legislation to be introduced "as soon as possible."

Among the changes called for by the ESAC is the right for the [Register or Login to view links] - what used to be called Customs - to seize goods they know to be pirated, something they cannot currently do without a court order, as well as stronger penalties, including jail time, for intellectual property crime and the outlawing of mod chips. Is Microsoft's XBox 360 Making Fewer Waves in the Industry?

100°
284w ago - In a follow-up to an article published earlier today, it seems that Microsoft has taken a back seat in making 'waves' in the gaming industry... most of which are PS3 exclusives as of late.

Now before the XBox 360 fanboys out there chew up this article and spit it out, hear me out... Earlier in the life cycle of the XBox 360, there were games released that were praised and adored for the technology and visuals they brought to gaming, one of which was 'Gears of War', this highly intense Third Person shooter was epic in every sense of the word, no pun intended.

'Gears of War' was THE game to own an XBox 360 for, with XBox 360 owners using it as a tool for arguments against PS3 users, who argued their system was more "powerful".

Everything from the games' graphics to it's cover-centric gameplay was brilliant, and indeed one of the many reasons the original 'Gears of War' was hyped for, was it's visuals. However after the release of the sequel, 'Gears of War 2', which saw noticeable visual improvements to the first, the XBox 360 has wittered out of the race to console visual superiority.

What am I saying? well if you take a look at the main set of upcoming games for the PlayStation...

Buy Before You Try: Why Videogame Demos Refuse to Evolve

50°
288w ago - With the recent news that Killzone 2's demo would be an exclusive bonus when one preordered the full game through Gamestop, there has been much talk about the wisdom of such a move, and whether or not it's the correct way to use a demo.

We're seeing demos being used more and more as incentives and treats in lieu of real bonuses and giveaways, which not only ensures that customers don't really get anything cool and worthwhile for their money, but seems to completely negate the point of a demo.

The first videogame "demos" came about in the early nineties, with the rise of something called "shareware." Shareware games acted pretty much like the demos we know of today, although they tended to be a little more substantial and could be upgraded to full versions, making them technically different to what demos would become.

For instance, the shareware version of id Software's Doom was the entire first chapter of the game. It was pretty common practice at the time.

Shareware games were basically free, although there was often a minimal fee just for the distribution and packaging. Rows of absurdly cheap floppy discs were a common sight back in "them days," and they also found their ways into the boxes of full games by the same publisher, or flogged off for a quid by some arsehole car...
