Video: PS Vita Sound Shapes: Jon Mak Demystifies Music Creation

250°
178w ago - Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has posted up a video today featuring Jonathan Mak demystifying music creation in Sound Shapes for the upcoming PS Vita handheld console.

To quote: Last week I finally had a chance to go hands-on with Sound Shapes, the upcoming PS Vita platformer music studio that left critics reeling in its E3 debut.

Coached by co-designer and Everyday Shooter creator [Register or Login to view links] and co-designer [Register or Login to view links], I discovered a deceptively simple platformer that gave me the tools to build a series of game levels - and a corresponding song - in seconds flat.

Sound Shapes' level creation and music composition are inseparable. As you use the PS Vita's front touchscreen to place objects - platforms, lasers, obstacles - that you'll interact with during gameplay, you're simultaneously laying down beats and musical cues that will evolve into a full song when you play.

During the creation process, you'll use PS Vita's rear touch panel to resize platforms and objects to further tweak your level's gameplay or musical style. Where you go from there is entirely up to you: the final version of Sound Shapes will enable you to upload and share your creation via PSN...

Jonathan Blow Shares Some Concept Art From The Witness

50°
252w ago - Jonathan Blow, game developer of the critically acclaimed game 'Braid', has shared with us through his blog that he's created a new Web site and blog for his next game called The Witness.

You can start following the blog [Register or Login to view links]. The first information he shared through his blog are some wonderful concept art pictures, but it doesn't say much yet about the game.. Don't forget to read the caption of each image!

The main Web site also contains the following poem:

"Through many births,
I have wondered on and on,
Searching for, but never finding,
The builder of this house.
To be born again and again, is suffering.

House-builder, you are seen!
You will not build a house again!
All the rafters are broken,
The ridgepole destroyed;
The mind, gone to the Unconstructed,
Has reached the end of craving!"

If anyone can make any sense of it, feel free to comment!

Sony CEO Thanks PS3 Fans for a Great 2009, NPD Sales Up 36%

200°
254w ago - Sony's President & CEO Jack Tretton has thanked PS3 fans today for a great 2009, and stated that today's NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January.

To quote: 2009 was a great success for the PlayStation brand in a market that continues to be impacted by a down economy. I wanted to thank you for making this past year the best yet for the PS3.

According to [Register or Login to view links]'s recent [Register or Login to view links], PlayStation was the only company to see consumers in three territories ([Register or Login to view links], US and [Register or Login to view links]) spending 15% more on PS3 software in 2009 than they did in 2008 - this is while the category as a whole experienced a 9% decline in software sales.

The PS3 was also the only console in the U.S. to see double-digit growth in sales this past quarter. December also marked the best sales month in the platform's history, breaking one million hardware units and 7.3 million software units.

We're nowhere near slowing down in the new year as today's NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January. This is...
