Videos: Netflix Instant Streaming Disc for PlayStation 3 in Action

200°
254w ago - Recently many users have received their Netflix Instant Streaming Disc that began shipping a few days ago.

As mentioned previously, the disc is required to use the Netflix steaming service on the PlayStation 3 until 2010, when a Firmware update will take its place.

Below are several videos of it in action, the first is courtesy of otimus via YouTube with the other being from JoyStiq.

To quote from the video's caption: "If there's any stuttering in the video, it's not netflix or the PS3, but my Junky TV Tuner I'm using to record. I don't think I got any stuttering, however. We'll see!

Connection speed: 3Mbps
Connection type: Wired Ethernet

Sorry for the lack of sound. I connect my PS3 via optical, and I was too lazy to go get an audio splitter to put it in the audio in on my PC to record audio from my tuner card. I have some real big issues with the PS3 netflix disc:

1) It renders video in 480p. The UI is whatever the res of your PS3 is, but video is downscaled regardless. It does NOT upscale.
2) Also, video ratio does not scale, like, for example, I have to set my screen to stretch for widescreen, and 4:3 for 4:3 content, else things...

254w ago - Today Netflix has begun shipping the PS3 Instant Streaming Disc required to use its steaming service on the PlayStation 3 until 2010, when a Firmware update will take its place.

Those who signed up for it just over a week ago should be checking your mail boxes sometime next week for it.

If you have a Netflix account, going to this 'Instant Streaming Disc' page (linked above) now lists the long-awaited PS3 Netflix disc as pending and has a field for Estimated Arrival... much like the queue list does. It also has an Activation Number field for those who receive their disc.

Check out some images below for those who don't yet have an account!

Zune Video on Xbox Live Could Finish Blu-ray for HD Streaming

350°
269w ago - Folks at E3 witnessed Microsoft instantly fast forward a streamed 1080p movie right at start up. But how could this be possible?

How can a streamed 1080p movie have instant access to every point of the movie? Doesn't it need to buffer that huge file? Could this be Blu-Ray's true competitor? Or perhaps the beginning of the end for Blu-Ray?

Let's face it, why can't Microsoft sell this same technology to other content distributors, such as Netflix. Or better yet, collaborate with them to create the biggest HD streaming option for consumers, while having the biggest movie library.

TQcast (linked above) recently interviewed Michael Wolf, Senior Marketing Manager at Microsoft, about the upcoming Zune Video on Xbox Live as follows:

Q: What is the name of the new HD streaming technology?

A: The name of the feature is Zune video on Xbox LIVE, which is built on top of Smooth Streaming. Smooth Streaming is a feature of IIS Media Services, a state-of-the-art video delivery platform which enables amazing high quality video experiences that are instant on.

Q: Exactly how is this 1080p HD experience working? 1080p video would be huge files, requiring large amounts of bandwidth, how will this work without buffering timeouts?

Rumor: Spotify Streaming Service Heading to PS3 and XBox 360?

200°
284w ago - A new music streaming service called [Register or Login to view links], which can be free when supported by adverts, may be heading to the PS3 and XBox 360 console.

Good news has now emerged that the Spotify team plan to release an API which will allow third parties to embed Spotify in devices such as game consoles.

To quote: As reported from [Register or Login to view links], a Guardian article reveals that the Spotify team are planning to release an API which will enable third-party access to everything they need to embed the Spotify service in devices such as mobile phones, game consoles and set-top boxes.

This sounds like a great idea in our opinion. I have the Spotify service running myself and I can tell you that it is very impressive. To see this running on either the 360 or PS3 would be something special indeed and no doubt a feature gamers will grow to love.

Has anyone else experienced Spotify yet? Let us know what you think of this idea below.

HDCP Required for XBox 360 HD Netflix Streaming

200°
307w ago - The copy protection police have struck again. The new HD Netflix streaming service on the Xbox 360 requires an HDCP compatible display device. If you try play a movie while not connected to an HDCP compatible display, you will get the "Secure HDCP Link Not Found" error.

For all the people that have a non-HDCP LCD monitors hooked up via DVI to their Xbox 360, you are SOL. What is not clear is whether your resolution be limited to 480p if you have an older Xbox 360 with only component outputs.

This situation kind of mirrors the DVD upscaling issue with the Xbox 360, with the work around being use the VGA adapter in order to get DVD upscaling via analog outputs.

What is Netflix worried about? Who in their right mind would waste their time capturing HD Netflix movies via HDMI? Answer, Nobody!
