Rock Band: 3 Million Units Shipped, 10 Million Songs Downloaded

338w ago - According to GameDaily, Viacom (parent company of MTV, which owns Harmonix), has announced that Rock Band has managed to ship "more than three million bundled units" since its launch last November. That's certainly a healthy number, and one that likely rivals - if not trumps - Activision's competing title, Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

On top of this, Harmonix has revealed that over 10 million songs have been downloaded off the Internet, which only proves that those downloadable packs are both highly sought-after and extremely lucrative. And much like Grand Theft Auto IV and Take-Two, Rock Band's success has caused Viacom's Media Networks division to leap.

"Media Networks revenues rose 16% to $2.02 billion, principally driven by strong sales of the music video game Rock Band," Viacom said in an official statement. "...our Rock Band video game is continuing its successful tour and is emerging as a valuable long-term franchise. We expect to further that success with the upcoming release of Rock Band on the Wii home video game system and our launch in Europe," commented Philippe Dauman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Viacom.

Without any doubt, the music genre of video games, once a budding new category in the interactive entertainment world, now contains several of the most...

339w ago - Sony has revealed some more details for the launch of SingStar on May 20th in the US. There will be a stand-alone SKU with just the game for $39.99 and one with two microphones for $59.99.

The disc will contain 30 songs and the American singstore will contain over 200 songs when it launches there and will be updated each month with 25-50 new songs.

To quote: When SingStar initially launches in the US, players will be required to download a patch, approximately 20MB in size. This will enable the features of the European SingStar Vol. 2 for the American release.

This patch will add an enhanced Duet mode, which adds harmonies into Duet tracks. Remote Play has also been added: you won't be able to play the game, but you will be able to access the SingStore, queue up downloads, and visit the My SingStar Online community.

344w ago - This is a song made out entirely of gun shot noises form Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

I couldn't stop laughing once I saw this, I couldn't resist posting it, this is both hilarious and skillful, they person who made this has no life what so ever... but i's still good.

PS3 allows in-game song playback from HDD and friend messaging

50°
370w ago - We! has confirmed that it is possible for the PS3 to play songs from the hard drive while a game is in play. This Spanish gamer was playing 'Everyday Together' on the PS3 (a Japanese downloadable PSN title) and he was trying to guess what each option did and stumbled across an option that asked him which tracked he wanted to play.

Moreover, the options were actually from there on in Spanish (his firmware language) which indicates that the player is integrated into the firmware and not options of the game as it is Japanese. Further to this, the player is quite advanced and it is clear Sony has been working on it as it has a number of options such as random playback, repeat a folder and related options.

But that is not all, this game allows you to send IN-GAME messages to your friends so you don't have to quit the game. It is also believed that this title is actually the first to take advantage of Remote Play with LAIR actually being the second.

Although it may be the first retail title to utilize XMB access, these functions have been in the PS3 early on as Sony leaves it to game developers to use them. Also, without the ability to change game files an exploit doesn't appear likely.
