Sony CEO Thanks PS3 Fans for a Great 2009, NPD Sales Up 36%

240w ago - Sony's President & CEO Jack Tretton has thanked PS3 fans today for a great 2009, and stated that today's NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January.

To quote: 2009 was a great success for the PlayStation brand in a market that continues to be impacted by a down economy. I wanted to thank you for making this past year the best yet for the PS3.

According to [Register or Login to view links]'s recent [Register or Login to view links], PlayStation was the only company to see consumers in three territories ([Register or Login to view links], US and [Register or Login to view links]) spending 15% more on PS3 software in 2009 than they did in 2008 - this is while the category as a whole experienced a 9% decline in software sales.

The PS3 was also the only console in the U.S. to see double-digit growth in sales this past quarter. December also marked the best sales month in the platform's history, breaking one million hardware units and 7.3 million software units.

We're nowhere near slowing down in the new year as today's NPD numbers show a 36% sales increase on PS3 hardware when compared to last January. This is...
 

Sony PS3 Worldwide Sales Cross the 30 Million Threshold

247w ago - VGChartz.com (linked above) reports that Sony PS3 worldwide sales have now crossed the 30 million threshold, which many are attributing to several factors including the late August PlayStation 3 Slim release, the $299 PS3 price cut and recent Final Fantasy XIII sales.

Approximately five months ago, the PS3 hit the 24 million point, which means in a little less than half a year six million PS3 entertainment systems were sold!

These latest weekly sales numbers show that PlayStation 3 has reached another milestone, and that Sony has indeed made great progress in closing the gap between PS3 and the Xbox 360 console.

To quote: "Thanks to Final Fantasy XIII, the Slim, the price cut, and new marketing, the PlayStation 3 has not only shattered expectations once again, it is ahead of it's closest competitor in EU, sells 1 million units Worldwide, and has now crossed the 30 million unit milestone! Congratulations PlayStation 3!"
 

Koller Amazed at PS Home Virtual Sales, Reality TV is Hitting PSN

248w ago - Today TheRegister.co.uk (linked above) reports that Sony Computer Entertainment's John Koller admitted he is amazed by PlayStation Home virtual goods sales and also hinted that reality TV is coming to PSN.

Speaking at iHollywood's Digital Living Room conference in Santa Clara on Tuesday, John Koller - director of marketing PlayStation platforms at SCE America - outlined the company's plans for family hearth domination with the PlayStation 3.

To quote: "Sony Computer Entertainment, the folks in charge of the PlayStation game console, are getting into the reality show business.

As it attempts to transition from a gaming company to a full-blown media company, SCE hopes to expand its PlayStation Network online platform into an "actual" TV network not unlike the American premium cable station HBO."

In regards to PlayStation Home, he stated, "It's amazing to me that someone would by a 50 cent chair for their PlayStation Home apartment with real money, but the revenue that comes from that is significant."

258w ago - After news of Sony's recent net loss, today it appears there is finally a positive outlook for the PlayStation 3 videogame console!

In a [Register or Login to view links] with from Quentin Hardy of Forbes, Sony CEO Jack Tretton stated that PS3 sales are now skyrocketing.

This comes after the PS3 Slim announcement, recent PS3 price drop and PS3 sales increase.

To quote: "Skyrocketing sales, Quentin. Couldn't be happier with the numbers that we're seeing, and I think proof that there was tremendous consumer demand. They were just waiting for the price point to come down."

Quite refreshing news indeed, especially considering this is a PS3 site eh?
 

PSPGo Already Getting UnOfficial Price Cut in UK, Sales Increase

258w ago - It's only been a few days since the release of the PSPGo and the console is already getting an unofficial price cut in the UK.

Numerous reports indicate that a number of retailers have already slashed the price of the system, as follows:

UK retailers have already started dropping the price of PSPgo, with Amazon, Play, GAME and HMV now selling the machine for £199.99.

It was £224.99 when it launched last week.

SCEE said earlier today that PSP hardware sales have risen since PSPgo released on October 1st.

According to [Register or Login to view links], Sony announced a PSP sales increase of 120 per cent following the launch of the PSPgo, although the new model only matched the existing PSP-3000 in terms of units shifted over the weekend.
