Video: Driveclub at Gamescom 2013: The Social Network of Racers

50°
52w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Justin Massongill posted up a video today from Gamescom 2013 showcasing Driveclub, dubbed the social network of racers below.

To quote: Guten tag from Gamescom! I hope you got a chance to see yesterday's press conference, where we saw a glut of new games announced (and finally found out when we can get our own PS4s!).

Sid and I are in Germany, tracking down new info for the latest games. Yesterday, I sat in on a presentation by Col Rodgers, the game director on PS4's upcoming launch exclusive, Driveclub.

He went into detail about Driveclub's social features, the PS Plus Edition of the game, and showed us how Remote Play on PS Vita works.

Rodgers described Driveclub as the "social network for racing games," and this is exemplified by the game's Challenge system. If you feel especially confident about a run on a certain track, with a certain car, even at a certain time of day, you can issue a challenge to your club, sending a notification to their PS4s or to their mobile phones (courtesy of the Driveclub Mobile app).

As they play and try to beat your challenge, they'll rack up points for the club.

Things get interesting when you elect to challenge your other friends, who might not be part of your club. If...

Video: PS4 User Interface Leak (Early PlayStation 4 Test Kit Build)

400°
54w ago - Today MoejoeWins shared a video on YouTube of a PS4 User Interface leak (early PlayStation 4 Test Kit build) with some preliminary details below.

To quote: An early look at the PS4 UI, which was accidentally shown during a Blacklight: Retribution demo earlier today on a test kit.

This layout may or may not be used in the retail version but we do get to hear some sound effects and see animations that could appear in the finished product. He does say that this is a very early build (though he may have been referencing the game) and that this was one of the first test kits to go out.

Some interesting tidbits/speculation based off of what's shown:

  • The PS4 can recover from a game crash without locking up.
  • Games are considered applications and can apparently run alongside other applications (multi-tasking).
  • If you're connected to the internet, application information is automatically updated in the dynamic menu.
  • Note sure about this: The built-in DVR can automatically start up when you start a game? Or maybe when you turn it on it stays on? Maybe it was being used for this livestream? (in which case this is pretty damn good quality).

Video: The Order 1886: Ready At Dawn Divulges New PS4 Details

50°
60w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton divulged new The Order 1886 PlayStation 4 details today courtesy of Ready At Dawn in a PS4 interview below.

To quote: A quick list of things that invariably get my blood pumping at a PlayStation E3 press briefing:

1) Big, bold new IP reveals; 2) Hugely talented developers getting their first shot at realising an original vision; 3) Ravishingly stylish games set in my hometown of London.

Duly, the debut trailer for The Order: 1886 ticked all the boxes - yes, even the last one, making 2013 something of a banner year!

But while the first showing of Ready At Dawn's new creation was undoubtedly one of the highlights of this year's show, it also raised a fair few questions. Sure enough, I tracked down studio co-founder Ru Weerasuriya backstage in search of answers.

We'll be talking more about the game in the not too distant future, but in the meantime hopefully the following exchange will keep your interest piqued.

PlayStation.Blog: So, exactly what kind of game is The Order: 1886?

Ru Weerasuriya: The Order is a third person action adventure with shooting mechanics. It's very much story-based - it's a linear story-based game. We're trying to tell a story. It's what we call a filmic experience.

Video: Introducing The PlayRoom on PS4, Only for PlayStation 4

100°
62w ago - Sony Producer Nicolas Doucet posted up a video today introducing The PlayRoom on PS4, and only for PlayStation 4 below!

To quote: Hi everybody! We're excited to unlock the doors to The PlayRoom, a place for fun and innovative PlayStation 4 Camera and DualShock 4 controller experiments!

As we recently announced, the DualShock 4 controller is packed with lots of new features (such as Light Bar, Touch Pad, Motion Sensor, Speaker, improved Dual Motors...). So what happens when we combine these with the PlayStation 4 Camera? Well, let us show you with this new video!

Let's start with the AR Menu. The first thing you will notice is how the Light Bar is tracked by the PlayStation 4 Camera. This allows us to make cool augmentations like these holographic panels, which come out of the controller and appear around you on the screen.

Using the Touch Pad, you can scroll through them and click to make selections. It's easy to use and very responsive, thanks to the high resolution of the Touch Pad.

Another cool finding is one we nicknamed "the sci-fi genie". By rubbing the Touch Pad like a magic lamp, you can summon Asobi, an interactive flying robot who comes out to play in your living room....

Red Barrels: Outlast Will Scare the Heck Out of You on PS4

50°
63w ago - Red Barrels Co-Founder Philippe Morin promises PS4 fans today that Outlast will scare the heck out of you on the PlayStation 4 console.

To quote: Hi, I'm Philippe Morin from Red Barrels! Together with co-founders David Chateauneuf and Hugo Dallaire, we started an indie studio for one reason: to use our experience working on games like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed to make the horror game we've been talking about with each other for years.

We're all big horror fans, especially David, and the game we wanted to make, a realistic survival horror game, wasn't the type of thing any big companies were willing to take a risk on. So we're taking the risk ourselves with Outlast, a survival horror, stealth-based game set in an abandoned asylum, coming to PS4 next year!

The best games make you feel something, some type of emotion that sticks with you after you're done playing. And fear is one of the most powerful emotions we can have as human beings. So for us, to make the best game possible, we know that we have to scare the heck out of you. We're trying to do that in a number of different ways, but where we start is with the design.

In Outlast you play as a journalist with no weapons or fighting ability. You're powerless and...
