Rumor: Sony's PS3 Motion Controller Named PlayStation Arc

However, Sony has [Register or Login to view links] the Arc trademark in Japan.

Today VG247.com (linked above) reports that according to a concrete source speaking under conditions of strict anonymity Sony's PS3 Motion Controller will be named PlayStation Arc, of which a domain has also been registered in the same name at PlayStationArc.com.

This news comes just over a month after the previous rumor that the PlayStation 3 Motion Controller was dubbed Gem, which ended up being an early code name for the product.

To quote: "The company is now saying its Motion Controller - the official name thus far - will release "this year": global boss Kaz Hirai had previously claimed it would be out this March.

241w ago - Update: Despite a "Gem" of a slip-up reported on [Register or Login to view links] by Disney president Steve Wadsworth during a keynote address, according to [Register or Login to view links], the term "Gem" was "an early code name for the product," per Sony Computer Entertainment of America director of communications Patrick Seybold. "We haven't announced final name at this point."

Recently a patent surfaced on Sony's PS3 Motion Controller, however, excluding previous rumors the peripheral has yet to be officially named.

Today, MCVUK.com (linked above) may have found a clue... Sony's upcoming PS3 Motion Controller could be named simply PlayStation Gem.

Maybe he mis-spoke, maybe it was a slip of the tongue - or maybe, just maybe, EA boss John Riccitiello has accidentally...
 

Sony's PS3 Motion Controller Wand Patent Reveals Attachments

241w ago - A recent [Register or Login to view links] filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. has revealed what are believed to be some attachments for Sony's upcoming Motion Controller Wand PS3 accessory.

To quote: "The patent for an "Expandable Control Device Via Hardware Attachment" touches on a number of control options. According to details from the patent, Sony's motion controller may offer the option to join two motion control units together lengthwise or in an H-shape.

And as pictured above, a unique, secondary controller attachment may offer a solution to the one DualShock in one hand, one motion controller in the other hand scheme seen at Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference.

Other potentially interesting add-on possibilities are attachments shaped like a baseball bat, a the business end of a flashlight and a rattle-like sphere that's very maraca like.

Rumor: PlayStation Motion Controller is Codenamed 'Sphere'

250w ago - Sony's upcoming PlayStation Motion Controller may be codenamed 'sphere' according to JoyStiq (linked above).

Currently both Microsoft and Sony don't have official names for their motion projects, although Microsoft has dubbed their technology as 'Project Natal'.

To quote: "One name Sony may be using with developers is "Sphere," a word that highlights the glowing, colored orb central to the motion controller's technology.

Sega producer Yasuhito Baba and his translator both referred to the controller as "Sphere" during an interview at Tokyo Game Show last month.

Polyphony Digital's Kazunori Yamauchi also talked about the PlayStation Motion Controller when we asked him if Gran Turismo would support the "Sphere" peripheral."

Will the PS3 Motion Controller be known as 'sphere' or is it simply a developmental name? Time will tell...

252w ago - Yesterday at Tokyo Game Show 2009 Sony revealed the redesigned PS3 motion controller and launch titles, and today some video footage is available (below) of the wand being used for Resident Evil 5 and LittleBigPlanet.

The captions for each video are below, roughly translated as follows:

Over at the Tokyo Game Show, the presenters showed off Resident Evil 5 with the new motion sensing controller coming up for the PS3 - the 'wand'.
