XBox 360 Elite Drops in Price to $299, RIP XBox 360 Pro Model

250°
266w ago - It appears the rumor from last week was accurate after all.

We now have a date for the Xbox 360 Pro model, with the shot (below) from a Meijer catalog due on August 30, 2009 and indicating the XBox 360 Elite is in line for a Pro-sized price cut to $299.

To quote: You'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumor - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate. This will leave only two 360 consoles to choose from: the cheap, hard drive-less Arcade and the 120GB HDD Elite.

'Lo and behold, according to this catalog, that move looks like it'll take place a couple of weeks from now. So long, 360 Pro model.

Rumor: PlayStation 3 80 GB Model to be Discontinued in Japan

250°
267w ago - I think this is another sign of new PS3 coming into town...

According to Kotaku (linked above), the Japanese stores have started to get a notice to discontinue selling the 80GB as of August 9th, which is about right before the new PS3 Slim is supposed to be announced.

To quote: The 20GB, 40GB and 60GB versions of the PS3 have been discontinued. According to this, it looks like the 80GB PlayStation 3 is next.

This [Register or Login to view links] is apparently from retailer 7-Eleven (7-Eleven sells video games in Japan) and stats that pre-orders for the Black, White and Silver 80GB PS3 will cease on Sunday, August 9 at 10am.

The reason listed is literally "For the manufacturer" – or at the maker's request.

The notice also notes that all in-store displays for the 80GB model are to be taken down. If this is true, then Japan would be left with only the 160GB PlayStation... Or perhaps there is an upgrade in store.

Smack Down Productions CEO: PSP Lacks a Viable Business Model

100°
294w ago - According to GamesIndustry.biz (linked above), Smack Down Productions CEO Laurent Benadiba feels that Sony isn't focusing enough on the PSP. He also believes that a significant marketing push could go a long way towards boosting sales. To quote:

"I worked for two years on the PSP, as one of the only developers then, and I really believed in the platform at the time," he said. "I still believe there's potential, but it's like self-confidence - if you trust yourself, maybe others will trust you. If you don't trust yourself, nobody will trust you.

"I think that's what's happened with the PSP - Sony released the product, but they never put enough of a push behind it. Games, ads, better shelf placement - trying to make an effort. I think it was also released at a time when they were still very focused on the PlayStation 3, trying to get it out of the door, that they slightly forgot about it."

He went on to compare the PSP with the success of the Nintendo DS, and noted particularly the strong line-up of first party titles on the latter machine.

"Look at it - it's so much more powerful that the DS, and it's a beautiful object, it's like an iPhone," he exclaimed. "Amazing, and the technology behind it is great. I think they expected the platform to just work on its own - but...
