Sony CEO: Core Gamers Should Be Served Before Mainstream

350°
277w ago - According to Sony's CEO Kaz Hirai, it's important to start with the core audience and build out to mainstream gamers.

To quote from a recent interview at [Register or Login to view links] with Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai:

"We have always started with the core audience and then expanded. A console always needs a solid core of games that appeal to gamers.

Look at God of War. We launched that in the seventh year of the Playstation 2 and a lot of people wondered why we did. It's because we always wanted to keep the support of the core gaming audience.

That's not to say we're not doing anything to expand the demographics. Singstar and Buzz are obvious examples. But we need to do this in a controlled way.

If you go mainstream too quickly and don't support the core gaming audience then you lack the pillar to support your platform. Without this pillar you end up with a fickle audience that might be big but will probably move on."

283w ago - It is not an uncommon practice to scour the Web, searching for news about your favorite upcoming games or a forum to discuss your favorite system.

Within the first 15 seconds of that search, you are bound to come across hordes of fanboyish articles stating that one console is better than the other. While neither side is innocent, there are many more Xbox love/PlayStation hate articles than any other, probably due to the system being around for an extra year.

What you may not know, or may not wish to admit, is that more and more Xbox 360, true fanboys, are making there way to the PlayStation 3. There are several questions I am sure you are wanting answered here, but lets focus on the general... What gives?

In the last six months, we have seen Sony step up it's gaming library with an onslaught of amazing titles that any gamer would feel naked without. It is true that Microsoft's LIVE service on the 360 is 2nd to none, and it should be. But what they don't want you to know, is that the PlayStation Network is gaining...

Valve Announces Premium DLC for PC Gamers on Steam

200°
289w ago - Valve announced today that their digital gaming service Steam will now support in-game downloadable content for its library of games. Yes, PC gamers, now you too can be charged for another hour or two of gameplay.

The first game utilizing this new Steam feature is Twisted Pixel's The Maw. The game now has two levels entitled "Brute Force" and "River Redirect" available for $1.25 apiece.

Hey, at least you don't need to buy Microsoft Points first, eh? The announcement by Valve also mentions that this DLC can be added to any game available through Steam, regardless of whether you purchased it on Steam, at a retailer, or through another digital store.

This news is bound to surprise a few people, as Valve's known for releasing huge amounts of free post-release content for its game.

There's no indication whatsoever that they'll stop doing this for their own games, though. The fact of the matter is, a lot of other companies are cool with the idea of premium DLC and this move by Valve allows them to do it more easily on the PC.
