10w ago - CCP Games developer CCP Greyscale outlined what he calls the New Player Experience in Dust 514 on the PS3 entertainment system today.
To quote: Greetings, Mercenaries. Our motivation for the release of Uprising 1.5 was to do whatever we felt necessary to improve the chances of new players making it past Day One of playing DUST 514.
The first step was to consider what sort of players we were aiming at, and decide which teaching approach to take.
Our target audience is, for the most part, gamers who are familiar with other console first-person shooters and want to try something a little more interesting. This led us to focus primarily on teaching the differences between DUST and other FPS games, rather than trying to teach people, for example, what a gun is and how to move around.
To accomplish this, we considered two major approaches: instruction-driven and objective-driven. An instruction-driven approach ensures that players are clearly shown what to do at each point along the way.
Commonly this means highlighting every interaction, locking out everything else, and ensuring that every single step is explained.
An objective-driven approach, by contrast, tends towards giving players goals to complete, and telling them just enough to let them figure...

14w ago - Tequila Works Creative Director Raul Rubio Munarriz shared a first look at the stunning PS4 / PlayStation 4 adventure game Rime below today.
To quote: Gamescom 2013. Where to begin? It was hugely emotional for us after being silent for so long. Not being able to talk about Rime publically or show what we'd been pouring our creativity into for so long was really difficult.
Finally our frustration was at an end. But ends also herald beginnings, and Rime being presented to the world amongst so many other unique and creative games was the best platform for an announcement we could have hoped for.
For us, it's not just about technology (although that's important too!), it's about how you create an experience - how you breathe life into your creation and set it free. Rime is a very personal project and, together with Sony, we have high hopes for our offspring!
16w ago - Cellar Door Games Designer Teddy Lee announced today that Rogue Legacy is coming to PS Vita, PS3 and PS4.
Below are the details, to quote: So if you guys have been surfing the web, you might have heard that Rogue Legacy is coming to PS Vita, PS3, and PS4. Well... it is! Pretty crazy stuff.
If you guys didn't watch the Sony Gamescom conference, you can check it out here. Feel free to watch for, like, 30 seconds, even though the rest of it is really cool.
Rogue Legacy had only been out for about 2 weeks before we were contacted by Sony, so we're blown away by how fast they reached out to us.
But Shahid and Shane have been great guys to work with, and we were able to get the a-okay to develop Rogue Legacy for all Sony platforms in a ridiculously short period of time. So yeah, go Sony! It's hard to believe that Rogue Legacy was all but unknown a short 4 months ago, and now we're still unknown and it's four months later.
If you've never played Rogue Legacy before, think of it as a genealogical Rogue-LITE. It takes a bunch of roguelike elements such as procedural generation, tough difficulty, and perma-death, and puts its own spin on it. For example, when you die you don't start from...
