PS3 Dev Q&A: Home's Cutthroats: Battle for Black Powder Cove 2.0

50°
106w ago - PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Manager Cade Peterson has shared a PS3 developer Q&A interview spotlighting the Battle for Black Powder Cove 2.0 in PlayStation Home today.

To quote: Last week, PlayStation Home got an update to the action-packed free-to-play multiplayer game, Cutthroats: Battle for Black Powder Cove.

With this news, we jumped on the phone to chat with Michael Mumbauer, Director of the Visual Arts Service Group (VASG), a madly creative department within Sony Computer Entertainment America. VASG has been helping make Home content nearly since Home went Open Beta and has made some of the platform's most entertaining items and spaces, including the Home Mansion.

Although VASG creates art and code for other development teams, like several of the World Wide Studios, this is their first full game.

Michael was kind enough to let me ask some questions that will shed a little insight on the decisions that went into this 2.0 update.

PlayStation.Blog: VASG has created content for Home for years, but when Home transitioned to a game platform in itself, it was the next logical step for them to step their game up and make one. What was the original concept behind Cutthroats,...

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for PlayStation 3 Cuts to the Chase

100°
107w ago - Sony Social Media Manager Sid Shuman has detailed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance for PlayStation 3 today stating that it cuts to the chase!

Below are the details, to quote: Let's not mince words. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is in most ways the polar opposite of the Metal Gear Solid series, abandoning restraint and resourcefulness in favor of unapologetic brutality.

If Metal Gear Solid was an elegant switchblade, Revengeance is a rip-roaring chainsaw.

The opening tutorial mission wastes no time in showing off the game's much-touted Blade Mode, a surprisingly intuitive mechanic that boasts palpable precision. You press and hold L1 to slow time, then hold the right analog stick to wind up your slice.

Hold the stick to the right and Raiden will draw his sword to the right; release the stick and he'll slash from right to left, cleaving obstacles and baddies in two. It's a devastating and deeply satisfying attack, but it's slow and expends fuel cells so it's best reserved for surgical strikes.

Blade Mode has been much discussed, but less has been said regarding Revengeance's impactful combo system. You can tap Square and Triangle (wide attack and strong attack, respectively) to fire off rapid slashes and acrobatic flip kicks ala Dante in Devil May Cry.

Video: The Last of Us PS3 Cutscene: The Sky Has Turned Grey

123w ago - Naughty Dog Community Strategist Eric Monacelli has posted up a cutscene video trailer today on the upcoming PS3 title The Last of Us dubbed The Sky Has Turned Grey below.

To quote: It's been nearly six months since we [Register or Login to view links] The Last of Us and development has been a bustling beehive of activity.

If you picked up the March 2012 issue of [Register or Login to view links] or saw any of the online coverage, you might have read about Joel and Ellie's visit to an abandoned city.

Today, we are excited to share a very fresh, very provocative video that should answer some of your questions about what went down inside those city walls. You'll get an idea of what it takes to be a survivor in Joel and Ellie's heartless new world.

Joel and Ellie won't have an easy road ahead of them. Their path across the US will intersect with other survivors, some of whom won't be friendly. In this scene set to the somber chords of Hank Williams, Sr., Joel and Ellie continue their journey west in a battered pickup truck.

As they drive towards the next destination on their route, and hopefully a place to find critical...

GameStop and Amazon Offering PS3 Price Cut, Sony Drop Incoming?

126w ago - This weekend retailers [Register or Login to view links], [Register or Login to view links] and [Register or Login to view links] have cut the price of the 160GB PlayStation 3 console from $249 to $199 (£159.99) leaving many wondering if an official Sony PS3 price drop is incoming.

To quote from PlayStationLifeStyle.net (linked above): "First GameStop cut the price of the PS3 by $50, then Amazon US, now Amazon UK has also dropped the price by a whopping £40 ($64).

If you live in the UK and have yet to get a PS3, be sure to pick one up now. If you don’t, then the deal should still be of interest to you - Amazon US and GameStop’s price cuts could be seen as simply a price war between the two retailers, but with Amazon UK now joining in on the discount, it does seem like retailers are discounting ahead of an E3 price drop, something that has happened in the past.

Michael Pachter previously [Register or Login to view links] that Sony needed to cut the price of the PS3 to remain competitive in the US:

PS3 hardware sales should continue to lag those of the...
