176w ago - Along with the PS3 Firmware 3.41 update, today Sony implemented Incremental Update Version PS3 patch PUP updates, with the less bulky PlayStation 3 update files named appropriately as "PS3PATCH.PUP."
As detailed by randalfHERE, CJPCHERE, and Examiner.com (linked below), the new Incremental Update Version files are approximately 40MB in size in comparison to standard 160MB+ PS3 Firmware update files and only update required dev_flash files, along with the core OS, revoke lists and syscon updates.
The benefit is simple: Both Sony's servers and customers save bandwidth and time downloading required PS3...
176w ago - Today Sony's Network Operations VP Eric Lempel has confirmed that PS3 Firmware Update 3.41 is coming soon alongside PSP Firmware Update 6.31, both of which will add PlayStation Store Recommendations.
To quote: The next PlayStation 3 (PS3) system software update is coming soon. Firmware update 3.41 will add recommendations for games and videos on PlayStation Store.
When you're browsing through the details of a particular title, you'll see a new "You May Like" section on the right-hand side. This section lists additional items based on the purchases of other PlayStation Network members who have purchased the item you're currently looking at.
You can then click on this section to zoom in on the list and scroll the recommended titles.
This feature is a great way to discover new games that you may not know about, and it's another step toward making the shopping experience easier and better for you all – similar to the five-star ratings feature we added in the last firmware update.
Please note that while the 3.41 update will be released shortly, the recommendations feature on PlayStation Store is slated to go live by the end of July.
In addition to this PS3 update, the next PSP (PlayStation Portable) firmware update (v.6.31) will be coming...
176w ago - Recently we reported that Netflix will be going discless on the PS3 by October, but today JoyStiq (linked above) revealed that Netflix also offers PlayStation 3 users the ability to search through their entire video library.
To quote: "Netflix just became a lot easier to use on the PS3. No, you still need a disc (for now), but the application has been stealthily upgraded with the ability to search for and watch videos from the entire Instant library.
For example, typing the letter "A" quickly revealed Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Unfortunately, the Xbox Live and Wii versions of Netflix don't appear to have been updated with this feature yet. Xbox owners will have to wait until November."
Engadget.com (linked above) has added to the list of 'hidden' updates PS3 Firmware 3.30 includes, noting both the addition of Remote Play from PC and supporting bitstream audio options.
To quote: "Additional trophy sorting and 3D gaming readiness should have been enough to satisfy and PS3 owner after the latest v3.30 system update (hey, at least it didn't take anything away this time) but there's a couple other surprises in store.
If you're the kind of person who loves (or hates) their beeps and bloops, there's a toggle for Bitstream Direct (output audio with the original digital signal prioritized) or Mix (mixed with sound effects such as button sounds and then converted to bitstream format) on Blu-ray movies, while future VAIO PC owners can get a taste of remote play without any PSP intermediary."
205w ago - We first heard about them a few months ago, and today consumer brand Red Bull has officially added Flugtag and Illume to Sony's PlayStation Home.
To quote: "Red Bull Flugtag is a competition that challenges people to build human-powered flying machines, and the new PlayStation Home Red Bull Flugtag area will showcase some of the more creative contraptions that have been presented over the past 19 years.
Visitors will be able to try out some of these devices from the safety of their virtual representation, launching off the island's bamboo flight deck in an attempt to score a spot on the area's distance leaderboards.
The second area, Red Bull Illume, highlights pictures from the Red Bull Illume sports photography competition, which I'm sure is lovely if you're into that sort of thing."
