245w ago - Earlier today, from GDC '09 a PS3 Firmware 2.70 announcement by Sony was rumored.
While we don't have an official word yet, PS3 Firmware 2.70 was confirmed present by many (props to ssneeky10 for the link) including some of the resident PS3 Devs, albeit briefly, on Sony's servers before being removed.
Chances are either a last-minute issue with it was found, or it was mistakenly put it up for download and removed, similar to what happened for Life with PlayStation.
To quote: Just got this from a prominent PS3 developer at GDC: "PS3 Firmware 2.70 definitely this week. Developers got it yesterday."
The update was rumored to have gone live this afternoon, but was apparently withdrawn. Watch for an announcement in the next few days.
246w ago - According to the folks over at TheSixthAxis (linked above), rumor has it Sony may make an announcement today on PS3 Firmware Update 2.70.
To quote: It's GDC 2009 over in California, and our ears are to the ground.
We've had to put up with the rumor mill grinding about Firmware 2.70 for a while now, but we've heard more recently gossip in and amongst our Twitter account overnight hinting that Sony are about to announce Firmware 2.70 for the PS3, and there appeared to be some maintenance on the network this morning, according to MGO's in-game notices.
Whether this will come to fruition or not we'll have to wait and see, but it has been a while since the last update; so whilst we're not expecting cross-game chat it would be nice to get something out of GDC.
248w ago - Psyonix Studios developer Corey David let the cat out of the bag this week regarding upcoming PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.7.0.
In discussing a bug with the studio's game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, David let slip in a forum post that the update is scheduled for release later this month, to quote:
"I've been working with Sony trying to reproduce and solve the PSN sign-out issues some of you report.
Any info you can generate will be really helpful. Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.70) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it's the same problem to be sure it's that and not something we need to fix on our end.
IIRC it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I'm excited about this one, lots of new stuff.
Though, I dont think I can mention any of them just yet.
It is not uncommon for developers to recieve advance copies of hardware updates so that they can ensure compatibility with their software. After the internet caught wind of the premature announcement the post was swiftly edited to remove any reference to the 2.7.0 release,...
250w ago - Update: Talking in the official Sony forums, someone asked if I saw the past codes. I replied yes, and the letters XI from the past messages sparked something.
If you didn't already read, the rumors for PS3 Firmware 2.7 claimed the in-game XMB loading has been drastically improved. Maybe they're revamping the in-game XMB as a whole. The letters XI could stand for 'Cross-Interface'. Okay, that's it Sony, I'm pumped.
A couple of days ago, we found some strange codes and writing in PlayStation Home. We posted screenshots, and no one really knew what they were. The codes and writing are back, but now it looks as if they're actually meant to be there and hinting us about something.
Could this help us confirm the rumors of 2.7 and it's features being true? Or is someone at Sony seriously not coding PS Home correctly? Could they be subtitles from an upcoming title Sony is already hyping?
250w ago - Neobara of the GT Forums (linked above) has shared the following allegedly leaked PS3 Firmware 2.7 details today:
Anyway, A friend of mine works in an R&D department at Sony and recently let me in on the firmware details for 2.7. If you were disappointed with 2.6, you'll probably like what you're about to hear, but it's still missing some very crucial (and heavily requested) features. Here's a list of the things he told me will be changed:
Friends List: • Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
• Home Integration: Saved Playstation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
• Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.
Gamer Card & Trophies: • Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
• Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
• Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
• Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.
