TGS '07: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Hands-On

365w ago - Uncharted: Drake's Fortune pits you as Nathan Drake, descendant of the famed British explorer (or bloodthirsty pirate, depending on your point of view) Sir Francis Drake, heading off on the trail of a great treasure supposedly found by the great man himself, shortly before he faked his own death. It is very much a game in the mold of Eidos' Tomb Raider franchise, but this isn't something Naughty Dog has a problem with; it's a rich genre, they say, and there's room for more than one franchise in it.

The game harks back to not only such modern cultural staples as Tomb Raider, but also the Indiana Jones movies, and it goes further back into the realm of Boy's Own adventures, old pulp novels, and 19th-century Penny Dreadfuls. As you'd expect with such a rich heritage, the story will be key, rather than just an excuse to get you from one gunfight to the next.

Over the course of the game, you will travel from a boat in the middle of the Pacific searching for Sir Francis Drake's coffin all the way to the mythical city of El Dorado, via ruined forts, deserted Spanish colonies, and all manner of other locations. Uncharted disembarking November 20 for PS3

366w ago - As the end-of-2007 game-release avalanche accelerates, some titles are getting out of its way. Last month, Grand Theft Auto IV and Too Human were officially delayed until 2008, and unconfirmed reports have Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and Mercenaries 2: World in Flames being pushed back to next year. Even Unreal Tournament 3's November launch window is looking less firm.

However, one game that definitely isn't getting delayed is Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Sony reps have confirmed that the PlayStation 3-exclusive action adventure will ship in North America on November 20. That puts it in direct day-and-date competition with the Xbox 360-only role-playing game Mass Effect and possibly the multiplatform Rock Band as well. The game has a less firm "holiday" release for the UK and Europe.

Developed by Jak and Daxter creators Naughty Dog, Uncharted follows a treasure hunter who believes himself to be descended from the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake. To restore fame and fortune to his family's name, he sets about island-hopping in the Caribbean to find the fabled, gold-packed city of El Dorado. Complications ensue when his seaplane crashes and he finds himself stranded on a remote isle crawling with ruthless, heavily armed mercenaries.
