306w ago - San Francisco (CA) - This year's IEEE International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) will offer once again hundreds of briefing sessions on the latest developments in the semiconductor industry.
Among the most interesting in the microprocessor category are sessions about a 45 nm Cell processor, Intel's quad-core Itanium Tukwila and entry-level Silverthorne CPUs as well as Sun's 16-core Niagara 3 chip.
Information provided through the ISSCC 2008 program are brief, but the document - which was posted earlier this month on the ISSCC website - offers some insight what we can expect to learn this year. Sony is apparently working on a 65 nm to 45 nm migration of its Cell Broadband Engine. Sony claims that the chip area size will be reduced by 34% and the 45 nm Cell will consume 40% less power than the 65 nm generation. The company also works on improving the design for manufacturability (DFM) for Cell to simplify the CPU production process.
Intel remains one of the major contributors to the conference and has submitted a total of 16 papers. We hear that there will be an update on the company's Terascale effort, even if there is no dedicated session mentioned in the ISSCC program. Instead, it appears that Intel will have two major focus areas: The upcoming Tukwila Itanium processor...
306w ago - Its hard to know where to start with this issue, simply put Tiscali are stopping all Sony PS3 owners playing Call of Duty 4 Online at certain times (mostly the whole evening up to 12 midnight).
I first looked into this when I could not connect to games on my Playstation 3 and got "error 33" with Call of Duty 4, and also having many other connection problems in the game.
After a little research I found out I was not the only one with these problems and even more amazingly nearly everyone was a Tiscali or Pipex (owned by Tiscali) customer.
I have read all 41 pages on a Tiscali forum, which shows many of the ISP's users moving away to another broadband provider and getting their Mac codes.
It looks like the issue is COD4 uses P2P to find games and Tiscali are blocking this at certain times...they are going to lose thousands of their customers over this if its not fixed fast.
The reason this has affected so many people is because COD4 is not the only game using P2P when gaming and lots of gamers playing other games are affected. You can read all 41+ pages here on Tiscali's forum and there are many other sites with thousands of other gamers complaining.
Now we are left with the questions: Are Tiscali legally allowed to block gamers from playing games...
306w ago - Since the PlayStation 3 was first launched people have been complaining they can't do the same things as you can on the xbox 360 with regards to online friends list, cross game communication and chat and the ability to play your own music in games.
As time has went on the call has changed from we want to be able to chat to friends online, or we want to play our own music in game, to we want in game XMB.
Now why is this a bad thing to ask for? In game XMB isn't what we need you see and asking for it may harm the PlayStation 3 in the long run. Lets look at the Xbox 360 here and identify exactly what it does. You would be forgiven for thinking that the Xbox 360 has in game dashboard, it doesn't.
When you press the centre Xbox button a little half screen menu pops up, on this menu is your gamertag, it shows you your gamerscore, and online status, which when pressed allows you to change personal info, below this the ability to send messages, see your friend list, and players met. Below that the voice chat and messenger section which allows voice and text chat with people on your friends list. Below this personal setting which allows tweaks to online status themes controller settings etc. Finally there is the music controller which allows access to music stored on the hard drive.
