265w ago - With all the attention being paid to the vaunted New Xbox Experience interface that will launch later this month for the Xbox 360, Microsoft quietly updated the Games for Windows - Live client today.
The update doesn't introduce any new functionality, that is planned later on with the release of a desktop client as well as the Games for Windows - Live Marketplace. However, the update does give the GFW - Live client a whole new look that's better suited for PCs.
The previous GFW - Live client didn't make much use of the bigger displays and higher resolutions that many PCs sport. It focused much of the interface in narrow boxes centered in the middle of the screen. The new client stretches across the top of the screen, and it presents more information much more cleanly than before.
Also gone are the Xbox 360 "jelly bean" buttons, the big colored buttons that referred to the buttons on the Xbox 360 controller. Those will appear if you plug an Xbox 360 controller into your PC, but if you don't have one plugged in, the interface defaults to a PC-centric look.
All the existing functionality remains. You can check your friends list to see what your buddies are playing and invite them to games or join one of their games; send message and voice messages, invite others to a private chat,...
265w ago - Yesterday we reported news of Microsoft starting a new wave of XBox Live bans on modded XBox 360 consoles.
Today, Microsoft's Major "Larry Hyrb" Nelson has confirmed it stating the following via his blog linked above:
Xbox 360 Console banning: I've gotten a few messages and seen some forum threads pop up on console bannings so I thought I'd post and let folks know what's up.
In our our continued effort to keep gameplay safe and secure for our community of more than 14 million members, Microsoft has taken action against a small percentage of Xbox 360 consoles that have been illegally modified in order to play pirated games.
The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive, both from manufacturers and the local companies that support them.
We will continue to employ and bolster anti-piracy security measures to counter piracy in the gaming...
265w ago - As mcdevitt1985 has reported (linked above) along with some users from our own XBox 360 Forum HERE, it appears Microsoft is on another XBox Live ban rampage.
According to reports, today they have issued a new wave of bans against XBox 360 consoles with modified DVD firmware. That being said, it's recommended to stay off XBL for the time being if you have a modified system until further details are available.
To quote: Dunno if its a massive wave or not, but my console was literally just banned from live within the hour.
If anyone else gets banned let me know please. iXtreme 1.4 and all games were burned right and stealthed.
267w ago - Some purchasers of the Fable II Limited Edition last week were surprised to find the promised DLC codes absent from their packages.
Now Microsoft has set up a system to get the codes out to LE owners, which can be found here, but be warned - Microsoft is keeping an eye out for those trying to scam the system by requesting codes without having purchased the LE. Lionhead community manager Sam Van Tilburgh states:
"Microsoft's first concern is to get content into the hands of LCE customers in North America who did not receive a code in their retail package. There will be people that try to game the system - we are tracking requests and gamertags associated.
We are focused on ensuring that our North American LCE customers impacted by this retail issue are quickly taken care of and receive their codes in a timely manner.
We are incredibly sorry and apologize to anyone frustrated by this process. We have been focused on ensuring that our North American LCE customers impacted by this retail issue are quickly taken care of and receive their codes in a timely manner. It was the quickest solution we could implement to address the issue.
Microsoft will be monitoring submissions from users looking to abuse the system but I can't discuss what those measures specific...
