MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Game Update 1 for PS3 Now Live

50°
296w ago - Evolution Studios Game Director Jed Ashforth shared the following via PS Blog today:

Time to rev up your engines guys, because the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Game Update 1 is finally here! More than just a patch, there's a load of new features in there that will make your time playing MS: PR that little bit sweeter.

Check the [Register or Login to view links] for the comprehensive details, but in the meantime, here's a peek at a few of the major elements:

• You can now back up your save data for later restoration to the User Account it was created under (on any PS3 system, so you shouldn't ever need to lose your personal progress).
• A 'MotorStorm Helmet' icon is now displayed on-screen during critical data saves. This is in addition to the HDD Access Indicator, which currently flashes while the game makes a critical save.
• We've fixed an exploit that was recently found where pausing and unpausing during critical boosting would grant you an extra second or so of boost. Repeated over and over people have been able to shave seconds off the top leaderboard times. Seems like a lot of work for someone just to cheat at a leaderboard time, but it's all fixed now. Anyone...

Sony Encourages Buying PSN Content Over XBox Live Subscription

400°
297w ago - Sony continues to play the value card in its fight against the Xbox 360. This time, instead of focusing on hardware, the company shows you what games you could buy if you weren't paying for Xbox Live.

During CES, Sony gave press the argument that the PS3 was actually a great deal... considering all the features that came with the system. That only works if you want those features, and a $400 system is a hard sell even if it comes with an Eva(n?) Longoria love-doll.

Sony has now made a second argument that makes much more sense: look at what you can buy for the cost of Xbox Live.

Microsoft's online service costs $50 a year, if you don't find a card on sale, and Sony wants to show you what you could be buying with that money if you were online with your PS3. You have to give it to them: $50 on the PlayStation Network gets you some pretty great stuff.

"Rather than paying a $50 subscription fee that competitors charge for on-line services, PlayStation Network users could put that money towards a variety of content," the company claims. What could you get?

• PAIN ($9.99)
• Elefunk ($4.99)
• Guitar Hero Classic Rock Track ($6.25)
• LittleBigPlanetâ„¢ Metal Gear Solid® - Level Kit ($5.99)
• Episode of Afro Samurai | Season 1 ($1.99)

Microsoft Launches 'Free Your Avatar' for XBox Live Members

50°
297w ago - Recently Microsoft launched a new way for XBox Live members to interact with their newly minted avatars.

The new initiative is called "Free Your Avatar" and with this new idea, comes a [Register or Login to view links] where you can take your avatar out of the Xbox Live arena, and put him into desktop wallpaper, screensavers, etc.

Once exported, users can then customize their image, uploading and adding props and backgrounds to liven things up. You will even be able to create festive cards that you can send to friends and relatives.

All clothing choices are free, and will remain available. It is easy to tell what is new when you are in the avatar editor, just look for the gold star. Any item of clothing with a gold star is new since the last time you signed in to the avatar editor.

Finally, Microsoft states the application will provide options for every special occasion, from XBL member's birthdays to holidays.

Hideo Kojima to Deliver Keynote Address at GDC 2009

50°
298w ago - Alongside Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, cool glasses-wearing Metal Gear daddy Hideo Kojima will attend to deliver a keynote speech next month at the event.

To quote: Called "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible," this will be Kojima's first appearance at GDC. He must have heard that all the cool kids were doing it. Last year's GDC was also populated by many big-time Japanese guests.

"The Game Developers Conference has invited Hideo Kojima to keynote every year for as long as I can remember, so we couldn't be more excited that, at long last, he feels that it is time for him to address the game development community," said Meggan Scavio, event director of the GDC.

"The anticipation is already huge to see how one of the community's most revered and elusive creators will inspire attendees to further push the limits of game development."

Microsoft Plans Free XBox Live Gold Functionality for GTA IV

50°
298w ago - Microsoft has announced that is will offer free access to Live Gold functionality for players of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV in February. Starting on February 17, anybody playing either Grand Theft Auto IV or its upcoming expansion, The Lost and Damned, will be able to play free of charge. The offer will expire on February 22.

The move is set to coincide with the release of the new DLC episode The Lost and Damned, which Rockstar hopes will revive interest in its open-world shooter. Hopefully they have also made some tweaks to the multiplayer modes in this new game. Heck, if it is free to go online and check them out, we will definitely give it a go.

This is the first time that Microsoft has extended such an offer. We can see this move potentially backfiring for the Redmond company, however. Like the days of Perestroika, once gamers get a taste of the good life, they might not be so eager to go back to the old gulag of paid online service.

Hopefully this opens the door for future online demo offers to coincide with the release of new titles, leading to the eventual liberation of Xbox live for all. Microsoft, tear down that wall!
