Microsoft Launches 'Free Your Avatar' for XBox Live Members

50°
288w ago - Recently Microsoft launched a new way for XBox Live members to interact with their newly minted avatars.

The new initiative is called "Free Your Avatar" and with this new idea, comes a [Register or Login to view links] where you can take your avatar out of the Xbox Live arena, and put him into desktop wallpaper, screensavers, etc.

Once exported, users can then customize their image, uploading and adding props and backgrounds to liven things up. You will even be able to create festive cards that you can send to friends and relatives.

All clothing choices are free, and will remain available. It is easy to tell what is new when you are in the avatar editor, just look for the gold star. Any item of clothing with a gold star is new since the last time you signed in to the avatar editor.

Finally, Microsoft states the application will provide options for every special occasion, from XBL member's birthdays to holidays.

Hideo Kojima to Deliver Keynote Address at GDC 2009

288w ago - Alongside Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, cool glasses-wearing Metal Gear daddy Hideo Kojima will attend to deliver a keynote speech next month at the event.

To quote: Called "Solid Game Design: Making the 'Impossible' Possible," this will be Kojima's first appearance at GDC. He must have heard that all the cool kids were doing it. Last year's GDC was also populated by many big-time Japanese guests.

"The Game Developers Conference has invited Hideo Kojima to keynote every year for as long as I can remember, so we couldn't be more excited that, at long last, he feels that it is time for him to address the game development community," said Meggan Scavio, event director of the GDC.

"The anticipation is already huge to see how one of the community's most revered and elusive creators will inspire attendees to further push the limits of game development."

Microsoft Plans Free XBox Live Gold Functionality for GTA IV

50°
288w ago - Microsoft has announced that is will offer free access to Live Gold functionality for players of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV in February. Starting on February 17, anybody playing either Grand Theft Auto IV or its upcoming expansion, The Lost and Damned, will be able to play free of charge. The offer will expire on February 22.

The move is set to coincide with the release of the new DLC episode The Lost and Damned, which Rockstar hopes will revive interest in its open-world shooter. Hopefully they have also made some tweaks to the multiplayer modes in this new game. Heck, if it is free to go online and check them out, we will definitely give it a go.

This is the first time that Microsoft has extended such an offer. We can see this move potentially backfiring for the Redmond company, however. Like the days of Perestroika, once gamers get a taste of the good life, they might not be so eager to go back to the old gulag of paid online service.

Hopefully this opens the door for future online demo offers to coincide with the release of new titles, leading to the eventual liberation of Xbox live for all. Microsoft, tear down that wall!

"Update Love"
Going live later today is Update 1.09 - a bit earlier than expected, but we're sure you won't mind. This update contains some minor adjustments plus addresses the following bug fixes:

• 'Failed to save profile' message not being displayed when a user's profile is full.
• Object Capture Bug: switch connectors being deleted when an object is captured.
• Failed to load profile issue: where the user is thrown out to the XMB due to a texture that is not registered in their profile being present in their pod.
• Text not displaying in the text chat window.
• Slow rewind due to moderation check.
• Save file corruption which caused the game to crash when placing any object in an emitter in any level.

"Awards Love" from the development community
The past few weeks has been a humbling experience with news of numerous prestigious awards nominations from both the [Register or Login to view links] and [Register or Login to view links]. Congrats to the Molecules and SCEE.
