Free Resistance 2 PS3 Themes, R:FOM Map Packs, and More!

50°
303w ago - Insomniac Games Community Manager Bryan Intihar shared the following today on the PlayStation Blog:

We know what some of you are thinking: "Well, Resistance 2 has shipped–I betcha Insomniac is sitting back, cracking a cold one, and taking it easy 'til after the holidays." In the words of ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso: NOT so fast, my friend!

We've been on the message boards reading your Resistance 2 feedback, letting it soak in, and working diligently on patches (Yes, more updates are on the way, and no, I don't have a definitive date for the next patch. But trust me–it's in the works). We also have some really cool new community features coming to MyResistance.net over the next few weeks. Expect another blog post soon with more details.

New Resistance 2 Trailer: Free PS3 themes and map packs won't be the only reason to visit the PlayStation Store on 12/11. We've also cut a new Resistance 2 trailer, which features some really epic moments from the game. I'd say it's my favorite trailer we've put together for this title.

Now, since this is the holiday season, we figured it was time to provide you with some Resistance-related gifts that won't do any damage...

Sony: No Plans for Rumored March PlayStation 3 Price Cut

200°
305w ago - Responding to new rumors of a PS3 price cut in March 2009, a Sony Computer Entertainment America rep told Edge, "There are no plans for a price reduction on PS3 in March 09, and anything reported on or discussed otherwise is purely rumor or speculation."

Over the weekend, online magazine D+Pad cited an anonymous source who purportedly attended a Sony staff briefing in London where execs said the PS3 will have a more competitive price from March 2009 and beyond.

March 31, 2009 marks the end of Sony's fiscal year, during which the company expects to sell 10 million PS3 units, or about flat compared to the previous year.

Sony has repeatedly denied a PS3 price cut will take place before the holidays.

Currently, Xbox 360s retail from $199 to $399 and Wiis sell for $249 in the U.S. Standard 80GB PS3s sell for $399.

SCEA sales VP Ian Jackson recently told analysts at the BMO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference, "There is no product in the industry today on the videogame console market that delivers what a PlayStation 3 delivers for under $400, in the case of the 80GB."

Rumor: Huge Sony Info Blowout, Pricecuts in March '09 & More!

350°
305w ago - In attendance at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing held yesterday in London, an anonymous source going by the alias of 'Legends' has just tipped us off on all manner of huge PlayStation news. We must make it clear that D+PAD weren't in attendance, but we have no reason to doubt the validity of Legends' claims.

Price cuts coming in March, PS3 performing better in Europe than 360

Our source tells us that SCEE President David Reeves took to the stage to discuss the current economic climate and how it shouldn't affect PlayStation business, though was quick to mention that SCEE will be getting more competitive on price from March 2009 onwards. Our guess is that we'll be seeing price cuts to PS3 around Easter to tie in with the release of Killzone 2...

Reeves then went on to say that the PS3 has a bigger install base than the 360 in PAL territories, and that the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009. Apparently SCEE is the success story of the SCE divisions, generating more profit than SCEA and SCEJ. 2008 sees it 'in the black' in profit our inside man revealed. Apparently there are more technological innovations to come for both PS3 and PSP, but details weren't disclosed.

Sony Says More PSOne Games on PlayStation Network Soon

50°
306w ago - Sony's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, has stated that they working on further PSOne additions to the US PlayStation Store and they should be arriving shortly.

To quote: There are many classic PS One games available to download through PlayStation Network in Japan, but we've seen barely any here in the United States (does anyone want to play "2 Xtreme," anyway?)

I didn't ask John Koller, the head of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, whether this was changing when we spoke earlier this week. My bad, readers.

But he did follow-up over e-mail last night.

"Yes, we are working on further PSone additions to the PS Store and should see those launch shortly," he said.

PlayStation 3 Now $400 More Than the Cheapest Blu-ray Player

550°
307w ago - Remember when the PS3 came out? It was comfortably the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market. That was a huge selling point for the console, trust us. When the PS2 first launched we conducted a survey that showed that over 30% of the early adopters bought it primarily for its DVD playback.

We haven't seen figures for the PS3 in relation to how many consumers picked it up as a Blu-ray player, but the release strategies and state of the market are comparative and a similar percentage would've been expected. (we've contacted Sony for this statistic and will update you when/if we get a response)

In fact at the time of the PS3's launch, the Blu-ray diode that powered the ROM was the costly and relatively difficult to produce component which stalled the release of the system in territories like Australia, and where Sony was losing much of its money on each console sold.

Earlier this week we reported that the Xbox 360 had received another price-drop and as a result was now 57% cheaper than the PS3 at a buy-in level. Yeah you can talk about Wi-Fi this and hard-drive that as they are valid points to many, but if you want to play Call of Duty: World at War tomorrow, you can for 57% less on the Xbox 360.

That's a face. We spoke to a Sony representative as to whether they would...
