Rumored Sony PlayStation 3 Price Cut Will Not Happen

400°
301w ago - For those of you wishing for a price cut with the PS3 think again.

Sony says that it is losing $50 on every PS3 it sells right now. If they were to reduce the cost $100 they would go from losing 11% to 33%.

This is why it will never happen and why XBOX360 will always out selling ahead. The fact that Microsoft can support losing 33% is why the XBOX360 can get a big price cut.

When Sony has a new console ready then the price will drop, but I believe they need to spend more time on their firmware and extending their warranties than cutting the price of the console. Sony, are you listening?

To quote: In late February an analyst with Janco Partners claimed a price drop announcement from Sony was due "in the next couple days." Nearly a month later, no word on so much as a sales snip.

But Sony's still losing about $50 per PS3, according to Business Week, which pegged Sony's costs at $448.73 per system as recently as December 2008. If Sony dropped the retail price of the PS3 by $100, they'd increase their per unit losses by nearly a quarter ? from 11 to 33 percent.

Start-Up Caustic Graphics Inc. Promises More Game Realism

100°
303w ago - A start-up founded by former Apple Inc. engineers said it has developed technology that could bring film-like realism to computer games and change the way movie makers and other design professionals work.

The San Francisco company, Caustic Graphics Inc., plans to exploit a technique called ray-tracing that generates extremely accurate three-dimensional images. Ray-tracing is a mainstay of Hollywood studios, but remains out of reach for most PC users. A single image can take hours to generate; rendering a film can take months on hundreds of server systems.

To quote: Computer games and other PC software typically rely on a technology called rasterization. Though the results keep getting more realistic, developing an interactive form of ray-tracing has been a longtime quest in the computer industry.

Caustic, whose name refers to light rays reflecting off a curved object, says it is close to achieving that goal. The company says its software and chips allow graphics chips to carry out ray-tracing calculations at a 20-fold speed-up compared with existing PC hardware. It said it expects to deliver chips by early 2010 that will be about 200 times faster.

In a demonstration, Caustic executives manipulated a photo-quality image of a sports car, removing components and changing lighting and...

Are More Gamers Now Choosing the PS3 Over the XBox 360?

550°
303w ago - We're not asking which console is "better" and it has nothing to do with sales. The question is designed for avid gamers and asks that if you consider every facet of a video game console purchase, would more hardcore gamers out there choose the PS3 over the 360 at this particular point in time?

When the PS3 first launched, no real gamer immediately went out and paid $600 for what the console offered that day. I'm not saying gamers who bought it on launch day made a bad decision, but their thought process would've been very different in 2006 than it would be now, in early 2009.

Then, I know people who bought the PS3 thinking, "this is going to give me my RPG fix." Now, as a big RPG fan, I find myself continually turning to the 360 for that. Then, I really had no intention of going online at all with the PS3; if I was going to do that, it would be with the superior Live service.

Now, I actually prefer the content on the PSN, and over the past few years, the free Network has made great strides. Then, the FPS and shooter fans all talked about Halo 3 and the impending Gears of War; now, Killzone 2 owns the headlines.

There's no doubt that things have changed significantly, so it'll be interesting to hear what people have to say. We have no choice but to view both systems in very different...
