Sony: No Plans for Rumored March PlayStation 3 Price Cut

200°
300w ago - Responding to new rumors of a PS3 price cut in March 2009, a Sony Computer Entertainment America rep told Edge, "There are no plans for a price reduction on PS3 in March 09, and anything reported on or discussed otherwise is purely rumor or speculation."

Over the weekend, online magazine D+Pad cited an anonymous source who purportedly attended a Sony staff briefing in London where execs said the PS3 will have a more competitive price from March 2009 and beyond.

March 31, 2009 marks the end of Sony's fiscal year, during which the company expects to sell 10 million PS3 units, or about flat compared to the previous year.

Sony has repeatedly denied a PS3 price cut will take place before the holidays.

Currently, Xbox 360s retail from $199 to $399 and Wiis sell for $249 in the U.S. Standard 80GB PS3s sell for $399.

SCEA sales VP Ian Jackson recently told analysts at the BMO Capital Markets Interactive Entertainment Conference, "There is no product in the industry today on the videogame console market that delivers what a PlayStation 3 delivers for under $400, in the case of the 80GB."

Rumor: Huge Sony Info Blowout, Pricecuts in March '09 & More!

300w ago - In attendance at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing held yesterday in London, an anonymous source going by the alias of 'Legends' has just tipped us off on all manner of huge PlayStation news. We must make it clear that D+PAD weren't in attendance, but we have no reason to doubt the validity of Legends' claims.

Price cuts coming in March, PS3 performing better in Europe than 360

Our source tells us that SCEE President David Reeves took to the stage to discuss the current economic climate and how it shouldn't affect PlayStation business, though was quick to mention that SCEE will be getting more competitive on price from March 2009 onwards. Our guess is that we'll be seeing price cuts to PS3 around Easter to tie in with the release of Killzone 2...

Reeves then went on to say that the PS3 has a bigger install base than the 360 in PAL territories, and that the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009. Apparently SCEE is the success story of the SCE divisions, generating more profit than SCEA and SCEJ. 2008 sees it 'in the black' in profit our inside man revealed. Apparently there are more technological innovations to come for both PS3 and PSP, but details weren't disclosed.

Dragon Quest IX Set for a March 2009 Release in Japan

50°
308w ago - Square Enix have announced that Dragon Quest IX: Protectors of the Sky will be released on March 29 in Japan.

The game, which has been dubbed "Japan's biggest title for 2009", will be shown at this years TGS but won't be playable. Pricing has yet to be set.

To quote: DQIX has endured somewhat of a rocky path before arriving at this final release time frame. The game was originally announced back in late 2006 as being due for a 2007 release. That was later pushed to 2008 as the game saw some changes to its battle system from the originally announced action-oriented system to classic-style menus.

Recently, in interviews with the mainstream media, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada said that a Dragon Quest game would make it out around the new year. He was either misquoted, or he was referring to another Dragon Quest game (or, just maybe, Square Enix celebrates New Years in March).

DQIX will make it to the Tokyo Game Show this year, but only in non-playable form. Square Enix will hold a stage show for the game, sharing the first details following a long period of silence.

Instead they have been receiving shipments of boxes with the model number CECHH01 on the side, which is know to be the model number for the white PS3.

It is believed that once the Spider-Man 3 bundles sell out, then the white PS3 will be offered for the standard price of $399, which could be as early as this March.
