172w ago - Yesterday we reported on news of the first x3JailBreak PS JailBreak PS3 USB ModChip clone, and today it is being labeled as a possible fake with a second clone dubbed the PS3Key Mod surfacing.
Similar to the x3JailBreak site, the Dutch Web site PS3Key.com lacks specific details on the alleged clone, so only time will tell if it is legitimate or not.
They do state, however, to quote: "Good news everyone! Our mad scientist has confirmed that getting into the console is as simple as pretending to be a USB hub! It doesn't look like this is going to take any more than a few weeks!"
According to Nyleveia.com (linked above), x3JailBreak is nothing more than the internals of a generic or branded-clone USB flash drive when compared to PS JailBreak which they say likely utilizes an Alcor AU6984 flash storage controller.
To quote: "Both devices follow a similar layout with a bank of SMT's leading to a crystal oscillator then a flash controller and lastly the SMD (Activity light). On the lower device, the flash memory itself is located on the underside of the PCB, as the many vias present in the PCB around the flash controller indicate.
173w ago - Earlier today we reported that the PSJailBreak PS3 modchip is easily dumped and that PSJailBreak clones are already on the way, and now some PlayStation 3 developers are working on reverse-engineering the costly USB device in hopes to make a less expensive or free scene alternative available soon.
Tsujin, knightsolidus and bushing have made brief attempts at determining the PSJailBreak IC chip and pin-out, while Neme6 of Logic-Sunrise (linked above) has also shared his findings thus far.
More pictures are available HERE for those curious, and to quote, roughly translated on the linked pics:
"Many teams are studying the JSP to try to clone a low cost and how it works. From the photos released, I tried to determine the electronic design of PSJ.
Here is the result of my work and my observations. Feel free to post if can lighten the shadows that remain.
First ICP is probably the type PIC18F declination 4455, 4550,...
173w ago - Yesterday we reported news that the official PS JailBreak site warned of clone PS3 modchips, and today it appears the first PSJailBreak clone has surfaced dubbed x3JailBreak.
According to several IRC users who mailed them, x3JailBreak dongle clones will be selling beginning next week for $20-$40 each.
While there aren't many other details available on the official www.x3JailBreak.com site yet, below is a rough translation from French site Logic-Sunrise (linked above) on these new PS JailBreak PlayStation 3 modchip clones.
To quote: "That is now three days since the announcement of the hack the PS3 has been proven to create excitement on the Web. When everyone realized that the long awaited hack console Nippon boiled down to a dongle with a USB output (at a price a bit high), the question on everyone's lips was 'is there an alternative ?, clones... like the linker?'
The answer is do not wait and made positive, in fact already found on the Web advertisements for the first clones, it was still very little...
173w ago - A few days ago we saw the inside pics of PS JailBreak, and today SKFU (linked above) has posted that PSJailbreak is both detectable and bannable on PSN along with Mathieulh confirming confirming that GeoHot's exploit was used and that PS JailBreak can be easily dumped.
He went on to state: "Actually they used the geohot hack to get code with lv1 privileges running on the console, they then used this to 1. Dump lv1 2. dump the spm syscall table (that's after quite a bit of lv1 reversing to even figure the spm exists) 3. Use the actual spm syscalls to trick the spu into calculating the proper response for the dongle id of their choosing.
Without those steps that all require geohot's hack, they could never have gotten their dongle to successfully identify as a jig and they could never have triggered their hack.
The psjailbreak basically exploits the update manager which is the code that does the dongle auth located inside the spm itself inside lv1.
We don't have the payload it sends though because we don't have a dongle to sniff...
173w ago - This weekend another PS JailBreak HD video has arrived from modsupplier via YouTube, which spotlights PS JailBreak PS3 gameplay footage and loading speeds.
To quote from the video's caption: "In this video we demonstrate the speed of your original games loading from the internal HDD using the PS Jailbreak and the backup manager software, the video shows loading up a game already saved on your hard drive, the speed that it loads and then some gameplay footage.
Then we show how to exit a game and select the next one you wish to play, we then also show some in game footage of the second game and once again how to drop back to the main menu when finished."
