World in Conflict: Soviet Assault video blends multiple genres

50°
330w ago - It's not every day you hear a game being touted as "genre-defining" ... it seems our "sarcasm keyboards" aren't quite working. Sure, we hear it all the time, but World in Conflict: Soviet Assault has an interesting mix of genre to get our attention, as well as Joystiq's.

Calling itself an "Action-Strategy" game, it eliminates the need to build bases or collect resources -- you've mainly got to deal with fast-paced action and split second strategies.

Imagine, if you will, an alternate Cold War where you're forced to battle the Soviets. The game boasts completely destructible environments and competitive online play (head-to-head and team-based) along with a hefty single-player campaign (from both the US and Soviet angles).

In online play, you get your choice of a specialty: Infantry, Armor, Support, or Air. You'll get tweaked controls for console owners, offering more streamlined interfaces. In addition, a fully 3D camera lets you sweep around the world in any way you want as opposed to the typical isometric camera options.

PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept released!

500°
335w ago - Yesterday we posted a rumor of a PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method found by dragula96. Many were skeptical as it was announced the day before April Fool's Day, however, today we are happy to confirm the only fools were those who dubbed it as "fake" :P

Courtesy of dragula96, here is the PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept along with related info and a new video detailing how it was done! Please NOTE (as suspected in the previous comments) this is a UT3 Mod and not true PS3 homebrew (running unsigned code), however, it is an excellent accomplishment in itself.

From the ReadMe file: ps3 hello world by dragula96 4.1.08

this is a proof of concept/hello world
this already works with firmware version 2.20
the idea is to use this method to try and code
games to play via the ps3.

requirements to run:

Rumor: PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method Found?!

200°
335w ago - Dragula96 has posted a video (below) on YouTube today that demonstrates a PS3 "Hello World" Proof-Of-Concept.

Needless to say, today is the day before April 1st (April Fool's Day), however, dragula96 has been a long-standing contributer of several development boards (including PS2Dev) for several years... so we have opted give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being and dubbed this a "rumor"

He also states he is attempting to get a game of Pong working, and that he will share the method and source code in time.

According to dragula96, this does not require any hardware modification and the method has been tested on a PS3 40GB and 60GB console- both of which have current 2.20 Firmware and are retail models, not development models!

To quote: In the video, you can see some tape on my TV, that is to hide MAC and IP addresses... there are no cuts in video at all.

I have spent somewhere around 9 hours to get this working, and I hope you guys don't think this is a fake.. I have a good reputation in the PSP scene. I would not release something if it was fake (even if it is close to April Fool's Day).

I do not know the extent of which the discovery will let me program, but I seriously...
