9w ago - Sony's Tom Wallis revealed details today on how real-life conflict inspired Far Cry 4 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

Set in the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat, this nation torn apart by war draws heavily from real-world locations to make the game feel authentic.

We caught up with Mark Thompson, narrative director, and Alex Hutchinson, creative director, to find out how visiting Nepal to meet people who actually fought in the civil war helped to inspire the development of Far Cry 4.

"One of the first things we did was to write down a list of different animals to include in the game," Mark told us when we met up with the team at Ubisoft recently in Montreal.

"We also made a list of environment features we wanted. From that we looked at locations where the two would make sense, and we came to the Himalayas. We needed to find somewhere that had a history of conflict - somewhere that could be politically unstable - the kind of place that you would go to that was on the edge of the map. Places that are referred to as 'failed states.'"

The difference...

Video: Playing Co-op in Assassin's Creed Unity on PlayStation 4

9w ago - Sony Social Media Specialist Ryan Clements made available a PS4 video today spotlighting co-op play in Assassin's Creed Unity on PlayStation 4.

To quote: Crowds choke the streets of Paris as Arno watches from the rooftops. Newly released from apprenticeship, Arno has been tasked with the assassination of a Templar wandering the high hall of Notre Dame during the French Revolution.

This assignment can take many different paths, and demonstrates just how free a player is in [Register or Login to view links] - the latest project from the open-world masterminds at Ubisoft Montreal.

For PS3 gamers, Ubisoft is designing a wholly separate Assassin's Creed adventure.

Assassin's Creed Rogue delivers an entirely new narrative perspective thanks to its hero, Shay Patrick Cormac - a former Assassin and newly-minted Templar. Players will follow the events that lead Shay to defect from the Brotherhood and become a hunter.

Rogue will also feature the fan-favorite naval combat that first appeared in Assassin's Creed III and had an even more robust presence in Black Flag. Shay's ship, the Morrigan,...

Video: Chariot on PS4: Bringing Gamers Together on PlayStation 4

9w ago - Creative Lead and Programmer Philippe Dion posted up a PS4 video today which brings gamers together in Chariot on PlayStation 4.

To quote: Hello everybody! My name is Philippe Dion; I'm the creative lead and also a programmer on [Register or Login to view links].

For those who don't know about the game yet, Chariot is a humorous, cooperative, physics-based platformer where a princess and her fiancÚ need to travel through a network of caves to find a resting place for their dead king, who takes the form of a hypochondriac ghost.

For now, I'm really excited to have this opportunity to share some of Chariot's vision with you.

Where it Came From

When I first presented the concept of Chariot, I envisioned a different kind of cooperative game. I found that the "co-op" concept in video games often boiled down to having a duplicate of the main character on the screen, resulting most of the time in a competition between players to get the highest score or lead the way.

If you've played co-op games before, then I assume you feel the same thing I do when playing with someone who never waits for you and/or who grabs...

Hands-on with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on PlayStation 4

9w ago - Sony Online Content Producer Rhys Sutheran went hands-on today with Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor on PlayStation 4.

To quote: Talion - Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's central character - is a man holding a grudge , not to mention a very large sword. Having had his family murdered by Sauron's armies, seeking vengeance on those who wronged him is set to become the driving force behind Monolith Games' forthcoming Lord of the Rings spin-off when it launches on 30th September 2014 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3.

In preparation, we got our hands on an early build of the game to put it through its paces. Here are just a few of the ways we found that Talion can wreak his revenge...

Choose your target

As Talion enters a new area, he can survey the land for Sauron's armies and check out which of his captains control the various sections of the map. If he's encountered one of them before - or managed to wring vital information from their spineless foot soldiers - he can check out their strengths and weaknesses, see where they can usually be found and start planning his attack.

Dominate the weak

In the thick of battle, Talion can grab a weakened enemy and use his wraith powers to dominate them, turning them to fight alongside the outnumbered...

Video: JBraamz: The Sci-Fi Inspirations of Velocity 2X on PS4

9w ago - FuturLab Technical Director Hussain Sheikh shared a video today showcasing their JBraamz lens flares and on the Sci-Fi inspirations of Velocity 2X for PS4.

To quote: Hi everyone! My name is [Register or Login to view links] and I'm the Technical Director at [Register or Login to view links]!

I've been writing a series of 'making of' articles about Velocity 2X [Register or Login to view links], and today PlayStation.Blog has kindly offered to host this particular post about the most awesome of visual effects: LENS FLARES!

Since the release of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek in 2009, people noticed just how much lens flares were synonymous with sci-fi. Carrying that baton forward, we decided to go full on J.J. Abrams crazy with on [Register or Login to view links].

Have a look at these beautiful things in our early concept art, seen just to the right of this paragraph.

Actually we were so inspired by J.J. Abrams' style of lens flares that we started talking about them all the time.

After many months of this, the inevitable abbreviations began, and what started as "J.J.Abrams style lens flares" soon became "J.J. Abrams flares" then "JAbramzFlares"...
