283w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) will be launching the fourth version of PlayStation 2 (PS2) by Diwali this year. This will simultaneously be released in the European and Indian markets, said SCE country manager (PlayStation) Atindriya Bose to ET.
The higher-end version promises to be slimer, sleeker and more suave in its looks. There will be no more external AC adapters, all of which will be in-built and the product price will also be the same as the earlier version (Rs 6,990).
SCE India will also be launching the playstation network for their PlayStation 3 in India, which will allow gamers to download free games and also buy them online. This portal is already available in the US and Europe.
"The PlayStation Network is ready for India. It is only the integration of the payment gateway that needs to be done." said Mr Bose. We shall launch it by the end of this fiscal, he added.
Sony PlayStation, over the last 13 years, has evolved as every gamers aspiration. It has its own cult following and to grow this base, SCE wants to market PS2 as gaming console for novices of all age groups and class.
"PS2 is an entry-level console, which helps first timers to enter the gaming zone," said Mr Bose. While PS3 failed to make as great an impact as PS2, SCE wants...
284w ago - Update: Since the original story went live, further information regarding the inclusion of trophies in the 2.40 update became available. As expected full 2D trophy support will be in the XMB update and there will be four types: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
Platinum is only awarded when you have collected all other trophies in a game. Also there are no gamer points, it's all done via a levelling up system. Think Call of Duty 4 leveling up system, we reckon.
According to Future Publishing, an insider has dropped by to tell them that firmware v2.40 is set to launch in around three weeks time and has also revealed all the features.
The XMB features that you will be able to access in game include - friend category, messages, manage downloads, set vibration, sign in to PSN, register friends, bluetooth devices, music category, use system BGM, work system BGM operation panel, settings, assign controllers, view profiles, game category, set audio devices and use the voice channel. The update will allow you to play back custom tracks in-game from XMB music column although it's not sure if this is only compatible with new titles.
To quote: A quick look at the diary reveals that E3 is just under three weeks away. It doesn't take a genius to see that Sony's pre-E3 conference would...

290w ago - Sumitomo Chemical Co. said Friday that in 2009, it plans to launch the production and sales of large-screen organic electroluminescence display panels for use in televisions of 40 inches or larger.
President Hiromasa Yonekura said his company is considering forming alliances for the development of such organic panels.
EL panels are thinner than liquid display panels and consume less power.
Sumitomo Chemical is developing so-called macromolecule-type organic EL panels. Because these can be produced through an ink-jet printing process, it is possible to lower production costs and make large displays, a company spokesman said.
