New Xbox 360 Controller May Poach Nintendo's Wii Market

50°
326w ago - What would it be like if you could combine the best of an Xbox 360 and the best of the Nintendo Wii? Gamers may soon find out if the latest rumors are true.

Citing anonymous sources, MTV News reported Microsoft will soon launch a Wii controller clone for the Xbox 360. It's part of a reported strategy to cash in on Nintendo's market differentiation.

"[Microsoft] marketing just want it so they can match the Wii point for point," MTV's source said. "The biggest parts of their marketing materials outline how easy it would be for third parties to port their Wii games to the 360."

Microsoft's Avatar Concept

According to MTV, the controller isn't much different in functionality or design from Nintendo's Wii remote, but comes with four face buttons, an analog stick and a microphone. There are also plans for the controller to interact with the Xbox Live Vision Camera, the source said.

In addition to designing the interface for the controller, Rare, the Microsoft-owned studio that developed Perfect Dark Zero, has also fleshed out Microsoft's take on Nintendo's Mii avatars, the source said.

Microsoft's Miis are designed to be associated with any game that incorporates the controller and create a standard look for the games. The avatars aren't tied to a controller...

Vader playable in The Force Unleashed!

400°
327w ago - Lucasarts have announced that the all powerful Darth Vader will be playable in The Force Unleashed. However, he will just be available in the games first level, and from then on you will instead take the role of Vader's apprentice - which is the guy you have most likely seen in all recent screenshots and videos of the much vaunted title.

As Vader you will apparently get to play with all the force powers available, causing as much destruction as you want, thus getting a good taste of what's to come further on in the game. If you ever played one of the Metroid titles you should be familiar with mechanic, although in this case you won't be losing your powers, but instead switching to a different character to build from thr ground up.

Sounds exciting, but it was recently announced that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be released this September, so you've got a bit of wait before you can grab your red lightsaber, and truly understand the power of the Dark Side.

The history of Grand Theft Auto

300°
327w ago - The Grand Theft Auto series is what brought videogames to the mainstream. It's a bold claim, albeit one that's undeniably true - sure, Lara Croft made the cover of The Face, but if you were to ask an audience of non-gaming types what modern games they've heard of, a good percentage of them are bound to reference Grand Theft Auto in one way or another, whether it's one of the original top-down 2D games or a more recent 3D offering.

Why? Whether it's for the right reasons (gaining critical acclaim for being, you know, actually good) or because the game was caught up in controversy on more than one occasion, the GTA series is popular - whether distant or close - amongst people of all ages.

Grand Theft Auto - PlayStation

The first game in the series was released on the PlayStation in '98 following its '97 PC release and was instantly recognised for being something special. Not that we need to back up this fact, but the cover of our copy of the game contains a sticker with a 91 percent rating from PlayStation Plus, nine out of ten from Official PlayStation Magazine, and 92 percent from Play... this speaks for itself.

Many have looked at the original Grand Theft Auto as being a much more arcade-led affair. You answer payphones and set out to complete the mission...

Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack Available Today!

50°
327w ago - Update: The Variety Map Pack is now available from the Xbox Live Marketplace. The download is about 445MB. Description from the Xbox 360 Dashboard: "Reinforcements have arrived!

The Variety Map Pack includes four new multiplayer maps featuring a variety of locations. "Creek," a wide-open village ravaged by combat where concealment is the difference between life and death; "Broadcast," fight throughout an enemy communications building with confined corridors and wide-open parking lots; "Chinatown," a foggy downtown district, lit only by a full moon and the neon glow of the city; and "Killhouse," featuring a desolate training warehouse filled with a variety of building mock-ups and soft and hard cover points."

The wait is almost over. The Call of Duty 4 Variety Map Pack (Xbox 360) will be available from the Xbox Live Marketplace at 9:30am EST today, Friday. Have to give credit to COD4 community manager Robert Bowling at iamfourzerotwo.com for keeping fans updated throughout the wait.

Robert also says there's a bonus if you play the new maps this weekend: "In addition to the map packs hitting, I hear there may be a little extra XP up for grabs this weekend when playing on the new maps."

See a couple of newly released videos of the Call of Duty 4 map...
