Review: Argon 2 Fourth Generation Chip for the Nintendo Wii

50°
284w ago - Recently Team InFeCtuS has launched their new 4th Generation Mod-chip for the Nintendo Wii console.

The Argon 2 is both updatable via Internet and solderless, and also capable of running Wii homebrew software available at [Register or Login to view links].

Today we review the Argon 2 drive enhancement chip for the Wii.

I will start with my first impression of the chip itself. In size it is just a fraction larger that the infectus chip, which is not bad at all considering it has an integrated official wiiclip built in.

A quick video of it in action:

Please note: (many others need you to solder one on if you plan to use one with their chip, thus adding to the size of the chip needing it, then you have the added hasle of figuring out which one you need, and once you do solder it on... wait didn't you want a wiiclip because you're not so handy at soldering?)

So for the average user this chip is DIY, and plug-n-play via wiiclip. The PCB hardware itself is solid, and it is easy to see that it is of high quality. That being said, let's get down to actually putting the chip to use.

Upon first installing it my first test was with a dvd-rw,...

Harrison: New Generation Will Never Buy Physical Media

100°
292w ago - Atari president Phil Harrison has revealed that there is a generation of kids being born today that will most likely never buy a physical media product. Therefore, they will not buy a DVD, CD, and never buy a game in a box.

To quote: Phil Harrison is convinced that the game industry's future audience will not be reliant on physical forms of media.

Speaking to Edge, the Atari company president said that "there's a generation of kids being born today and probably already alive who I'm pretty confident will never buy a physical media product. They will never buy a DVD, they will never buy a CD, and they will never buy a game in a box."

Harrison and Atari CEO David Gardner are already gearing the company towards this perceived trend. Back in September Gardner explained that the future of Atari lies in online play and distribution, with the former EA executive declaring that "within five years 90 per cent of our products will be online."

The Top 5 Game Developers of This Generation

250°
297w ago - By now, the term 'Next-gen' has transformed itself into 'Current-gen' in the minds of videogame enthusiasts. Gamers all across the world have seen what the consoles are capable of, played the cream of the crop, bickered about which version has more Trees, etc.

While there have been a few flops this Gen (Yes, we're looking at YOU Too Human & Lair) there have certainly been plenty of hits. With excellent software having been released for all 3 platforms, we turn our attention to the teams behind the software.

#5- Nintendo EAD (Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, LOZ: Twilight Princess)

Nintendo's dramatic shift into casual gaming caused a lot of anger and complaints: "Why all the casual games?!?", "Do they even care about core gamers?!! "What The heck is WiiFit?", all these were questions thrown at the Japanese video game juggernaut.

While it's clear the 'Old Nintendo' is long gone, the 'new' Nintendo still has the most valuable feature of the departed: The ability to produce kick-butt games. Mario Galaxy is a shining example of what Nintendo EAD has brought to the table this gen; Innovative gameplay that is pure fun to play through.

Though Nintendo EAD's Online efforts are virtually non-existent, their continued efforts in producing great offline games have been met with...

Microsoft Confident of Second Place Finish this Generation

50°
305w ago - Don Mattrick, senior vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, has said he expects the XBox 360 to secure second place in the current generation console war.

"We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony," Mattrick told Business Week.

He made the comments as Microsoft announced it was slashing the price of all three of its Xbox 360 models in the US, having recently done so in Japan also. As a result of the move, the entry level Xbox 360 Arcade is now priced at $199, making it the cheapest of the current generation of consoles on the market.

However, Mattrick said he was less confident of the Xbox 360 catching this generation's current market leader, Nintendo's Wii.

"I'm not at a point where I can say we're going to beat Nintendo," he said.
