XBox 360 is Officially the Only Game Console to Stream Netflix

300°
281w ago - It now appears the XBox 360 is officially the only console to stream Netflix, leaving Sony's PS3 (with the exception of Bravia TVs) and the Nintendo Wii ([Register or Login to view links] notwithstanding) to utilize other services.

At the very bottom of Microsoft's long list of details surrounding today's Xbox LIVE update, it states that the Netflix Watch Instantly integration is now an "exclusive partnership," with Microsoft going so far as to say that the "Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers."

To quote: Netflix Partnership - This exclusive partnership offers you the ability to instantly stream movies and TV episodes from Netflix to the television via Xbox 360.

Xbox 360 will be the only game console to offer this movie-watching experience, available to Xbox LIVE Gold members who are also Netflix unlimited plan subscribers, at no additional cost.

From the Netflix Web site, simply add movies and TV episodes to your instant Queue,...

PS3's External Video Backup Works, But You Can't Stream

50°
283w ago - This weekend Gizmodo (linked above) has tested out the PS3's external video storage from the not-so-recent PS3 Firmware 2.70 update, and they have confirmed it works as intended.

To quote: You can back up your purchased videos to any external USB drive, be it a flash drive or a standard USB hard drive. The video will show up on in a backup folder inside the drive, but you can't stream directly from the drive.

So it's not like you can connect a 1TB USB hard drive and dump all your movies onto there for on-the-fly watching. You're limited to whatever space you have on your PS3's drive for storage, but you can swap in/swap-out from the external drive with relative ease.

So yeah, nice job Sony for putting out this video backup. It's great for the person who downloads a lot of movies from Sony's PSN service, which has a surprisingly decent selection for a service that's not that old.

Wedbush Morgan: Netflix has partnered with Microsoft

100°
343w ago - Wedbush Morgan Securities has speculated about a possible Netflix deal to stream movies through Xbox 360 consoles.

The conclusion, made by the investment banking firm, came off the back of comments made by Netflix management. If true it would allow the online rental service to stream movies directly into consumer's consoles.

"As we have speculated in the past, we believe that one of Netflix's partners is Microsoft. We arrive at this conclusion based upon Netflix management repeatedly mentioning 'Internet enabled video game consoles'," said a Wedbush Morgan statement.

"While there are three such consoles, only one - Microsoft's Xbox 360 - has a sufficiently large installed base to make sense from a streaming partnership with Netflix."

"The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions. The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure," it added.

Earlier this year, Netflix had surveyed subscribers on the possibility of streaming movies via the Xbox 360 console.
