Take-Two Reports PlayStation 3 Biggest Revenue Generator

50°
305w ago - Sales were up at Take-Two Interactive, thanks to sales of games like Grand Theft Auto IV and Midnight Club: Los Angeles, but the publisher saw losses also increase to the tune of $15 million.

The company pointed to two other titles, NBA 2K9 and Carnival Games as leaders for the quarter, laying out its fiscal 2009 game plan.

That includes two batches of Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable episodes due by October 31, 2009, one of which has already been announced and dated. The company boasted that more than 3 million games in the Carnival Games series have been shipped.

Take-Two list the PlayStation 3 as its biggest revenue generator on the publishing side, with 35% of the quarterly take. That beats out the Xbox 360, which brought in 28% of its publishing dollars, and the Wii, at 11%.

For the entire fiscal year, Take-Two brought in $1.5375 billion in revenue, with $97.1 million in net revenue. That's much better than the company's 2007, when it raked in $981.8 million, resulting in a loss of over $138 million.

New XBox Experience Update Says Hello with RRoD Reports

50°
309w ago - Looks like the New Xbox Experience dashboard update is experiencing some not-so-new Xbox woes. November 19: launch day for the NXE update. Not 24 hours after it went live, complaints
are already piling up.

Various forums online (such as the one linked above) have threads and threads of people reporting anything from connection freezes, slow downs, lock ups, broken TV connections, and so many other different numerical errors that, if all of them were strung together, could potentially measure all the way from Earth to the moon (and back).

There are even reports of brickage - yes, the famed red ring of death is back. Some say it's limited to modded consoles only (no surprise there) but other untainted units seem to be affected by the same problem too.

We've yet to hear any official response from Major Nelson or any of the Microsoft staff. Some say the slow downs are caused by the simple fact of surging traffic accessing XBL, but the other problems are still unaccounted for.

If you are experiencing any problems with the NXE update, you might want to contact customer service (good luck!) or check forums to ask around if anyone's getting the same problem as you.

EA Reports $310 Million Net Loss, Cuts Workforce by Six Hundred

50°
312w ago - Word hit today through the grapevine that "massive" layoffs had hit at Electronic Arts. Initially we heard as much as 20 percent of the staff has been let go, but a quick check with Electronic Arts confirms that it was actually 6 percent, or about 600 positions.

"EA is continuing to make progress against our business plan, but we have the constant imperative to keep our costs in line as we grow our revenues and improve our margins," Electronic Arts spokesperson Mariam Sughayer told me. "Decisions that impact people's jobs are always extremely tough but all of the people affected will be treated fairly and respectfully."

"We have begun a cost reduction initiative which will include eliminating approximately six percent of our existing workforce - or approximately 600 positions. We will also reduce hiring and close some open positions that we had previously planned to fill this fiscal year."

"All parts of EA have reviewed their team sizes to adjust employee numbers. The goal is to ensure we're resourced in a way that allows us to continue to grow our revenues while at the same time keeping our costs under control and improving profitability. These changes will be announced to affected staff starting October 30."

"These are challenging economic times around the world, and it's...

Sony Refuses to Comment on Pay-to-Play MAG Reports

50°
316w ago - Sony has refused to comment on rumors that they will charge people to play online shooter 'MAG' (Massive Action Game).

Apparently Sony mailed out a survey asking gamers if they would be willing to pay a monthly or yearly fee to play the game. Many have been angered by the rumors, but some say they wouldn't mind paying for a lag free experience.

Sony revealed MAG at this years E3 and it will support up to 256 players in eight player squads. Sony have said that there is nothing out in the market today that is like it and that a game such as this would not be possible on other consoles.

To quote: Currently there is no evidence to prove the validity of the report, which a Sony rep pointed out to us when contacted this morning. We also got the obligatory: "We don't comment on rumor and speculation", too.
