Project: Resident PS3 Devs Are Seeking a RE Specialist

800°
271w ago - A few months back we gave a shout out for a talented coder, and shortly after SamY was welcomed to our PS3 Dev Team!

In recent weeks we have made some significant progress with the PS3 Reference Tool, which will be detailed as time permits in the months to come.

That being said, we are now seeking someone who can help with MIPs Executable (ELF) reversals from decrypted, non-obfuscated file dumps.

A few of the resident PS3 Devs have assisted us with this in the past, but for the near future are unable to devote the time and we would like to keep moving forward at a comfortable pace.

So.. if you have experience in this area, feel free to message me (CJPC) on IRC EFnet, reply to this thread or E-Mail Us.

As soon as you have demonstrated your ability, we will add you as a PS3 Dev here and invite you to our PS3 Dev IRC channel to work directly with us.

PS: Please keep in mind, this progress has nothing at all to do with the Retail PS3 console......

PS3 Motion Sensor Development Kits Making Way to Devs

400°
289w ago - At E3 2009 Sony first unveiled their new PS3 Motion-sensing Controller for the PlayStation 3 console.

Since then, Sony America marketer Peter Dille has revealed that Sony's motion sensing development kits have already been making their way into the hands of developers.

Dille also revealed that Sony is a bit past the research phase, to quote:

But it seems as if Sony's motion tech is more near completion than previously thought. Sony America marketer Peter Dille told [Register or Login to view links] that its already found its way into developers hands.

"We're a little bit past the research phase," he said. "We're having conversations with the third-party community. The dev kits have started to go out to the third parties as well. They're working on the tech. They couldn't be more excited about it."

We must admit it did look lots of fun fun aiming arrows at skeletons, as Sony did during its presentation.

That said the smart money would be on Microsoft's Project Natal arriving before PS3's own movement detecting device. Not before Wii MotionPlus hits stores though.

GDC '09: Insomniac Makes Available PS3 Water Tech for Devs

50°
299w ago - Insomniac Games Engine Director Mike Acton announced today that the PS3 Water Tech code is now freely available for developers to use:

Hello from GDC 09! My name is Mike Acton and I'm the Engine Director at [Register or Login to view links]. Last year at GDC we announced our [Register or Login to view links] and how we were going to use that to share some of the source code and research that happens here at Insomniac Games with the industry as a whole.

I'm really pleased to say that over the last year we've seen a lot of good responses to that initiative. From individual students, to large studios and publishers, and even companies outside the industry, we've seen that people are interested in using what we have offered and contributing back ideas and changes.

Nocturnal is really about giving back to the industry. We know that we're here because we learned from those that came before us and we have a responsibility to give back in turn.

We take that responsibility very seriously and so we've worked hard to make sure we've added regularly to both our research documentation and source code over the last year. Just about every two weeks...

Metroid Prime Devs Eye XBox 360 and PS3 for Future Games

50°
327w ago - Three key devs behind Nintendo's Metroid Prime series have formed a new studio called Armature, under the publishing flag of Electronic Arts.

What does that mean for us gamers, exactly? It means the prime (hah) talents behind Metroid are now free to develop games for non-Nintendo platforms.

The devs heading Armature Studios - Mark Pacini, Todd Keller and Jack Matthews, (who were the former Game Director, Art Director, and Principal Tech Engineer of the Metroid franchise, respectively) - have expressed interest in the PS3 and 360. Says Pacini:

From my stand point, I've never worked on any other console. I've always made games for Nintendo. I'm reinvigorated. I'm really excited about what other opportunities are out there. How can we use Xbox Live? How can we use the power of the PS3?

I think it really opens it up. I'm not saying it was by any means restrictive working for Nintendo. We had this palette to work on, the Wii and the DS, but now we have everything.

Personally I'm looking forward to see what they have in store for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Not that I don't think the Wii is a capable platform, but it lacks the processing power its competition has. I'd like to see what the devs can do with that extra power.

Does this...
