Puppeteer: Behind the Scenes with the Weird, Wild PS3 Adventure

81w ago - Sony Blog Manager Fred Dutton has gone behind the scenes with the upcoming weird and wild PS3 adventure game Puppeteer today!

To quote: Puppeteer's Gamescom reveal last month was a real joy to behold - a bright, bold new PlayStation IP promising primary-colored platforming fun with some deliciously dark trimmings.

A month or two on, last week PlayStation.Blog had the opportunity to actually sit down with a controller and see if it delivers on that pledge.

High up in Sony Japan Studio's towering Tokyo HQ, creator Gavin Moore walked us through the game's opening chapter, which sees a hapless young lad called Kutaro enslaved by the impossibly evil Moon Bear King and transformed into a puppet.

But steel yourselves - this isn't a cozy Pinocchio-esque tale of a plucky hero embarking on a cheerful quest to (re)gain human form. Far from it - Puppeteer's opening minutes sees poor Kutaro's head brutally torn off by our antagonist and his body nonchalantly tossed into a dank, gloomy cellar.

And that's where you, the player, come in. Guided by gloomy cloth cat Ying Yang, you'll step into Kutaro's shoes and go in search of a new noggin, of which there...

108w ago - Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared a behind the scenes video today spotlighting the making of Kara: behind the scenes of Quantic Dream's PS3 tech demo below.

To quote: The creators of Heavy Rain didn't come empty handed to this year's Game Developers Conference. The celebrated studio debuted a powerful new "video" called Kara to show off their new animation and performance-capture technology.

If you've seen Kara, then you know that the results speak for themselves.

Rendered in real time on PS3 hardware, Kara chronicled the activation of a self-aware synthetic organism, but this making-of feature is impressive in its own right as it shows how Quantic Dream assembled several different performances to create a seamless, believable virtual character. The future is now, you guys.

Once you've watched the video feature, let us know what you think in the comments! And as a reminder: Kara is absolutely, positively not Quantic Dream's next game.

Video: Uncharted 3 PS3 Behind The Scenes: Motion Capture

129w ago - SCEE Manager James Gallagher has made available a video today showcasing the motion capture technology utilized in Uncharted 3 PS3 behind the scenes.

To quote: I don't need to remind you that the release of Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is less than a week away and you may have seen that the reviews are rolling in, including perfect scores from IGN, PlayStation Official Magazine UK, Destructoid, The Guardian and more.

These critics have all highlighted narrative and, in particular, the actors' performances as particular strengths.

It's unusual, when you think about it, to be talking about performances in the context of a game, but it's that marriage of technology and human acting, along with a great script and a skilled team of animators, that brings Drake, Sully and co. to life in such a believable way.

While we were in Jordan a few weeks ago - you may have seen our Treasure Hunt video here on the blog - we spoke with Nolan North and Emily Rose, the actors behind Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher, as well as Taylor Kurosaki and Arne Meyer from Naughty Dog, about how this performance capture process works.

Update: This week, we're...

148w ago - Ubisoft PR Coordinator Alex Monney has announced that Outland is now on PSN, and shared some Behind-the-Scenes Housemarque video footage on the title below.

To quote: The day has finally come and we are ecstatic to have released Outland on the PlayStation Network. Many of you first heard of this platformer/Ikaruga mash-up when we first announced it at our Digital Day event last year and got a deeper dive when PlayStation.Blog's Sid Shuman gave a quick preview from PAX East 2011.

The idea of the game is simple: you are following in the footsteps of an ancient hero looking to prevent the destruction of the world at the hands of the goddesses of chaos. However, mix in the polarity switching and you have one amazingly challenging game.

Housemarque, known for their work on Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD, has been receiving a ton of praise on Outland, including 1UP calling it "one of the best downloadable games this year". Let's take a deeper dive into the development of Outland:

Be sure to check out Outland now on the PlayStation Store. For $9.99, you can pick up a critically acclaimed platformer with epic boss battles and online...
