111w ago - Today Executive Producer Brandon Laurino has announced on the PS Blog that Dust 514 will be free to play on the PlayStation 3 entertainment system!

To quote: We have some big news about DUST 514 coming out this week and wanted to write a more personal note about it here, to you.

The development of DUST 514 has been an amazing experience, as we at CCP pioneer new frontiers for console games in collaboration with Sony.

It has really been a process of exploring and breaking new ground - running an MMO service that needs constant updates on a console, microtransactions on a console, connecting an MMO on console to an MMO on PC in a real time shared universe and the Marketplace between the two - and there's even more to come.

Today, I'm writing about one more of those things - DUST 514 will be free to play on PlayStation 3!

This news means DUST 514 is the first ever game built from the ground up as a free to play MMOFPS on console, exclusively on the PlayStation 3.

Thanks to how Sony has set up the PlayStation Network - and the innovations they have been making on it together with us - Sony's console platform is the only one able to support this kind...

Naughty Dog Shares the Latest Details on The Last of Us for PS3

111w ago - Today Naughty Dog Community Strategist Arne Meyer has shared the latest details on The Last of Us for the PS3 entertainment system below.

To quote: February has been a month flush with new information about The Last of Us trickling out from a variety of Web sites, magazines and more that have visited the Naughty Dog studio over the past three months.

One of the more in-depth looks at The Last of Us came from the US publication Game Informer, who put together a cover story hub for all the OTHER information they managed to squeeze out of us from a very, very short visit.

The most important part of their visit, to me, was that we were able to show a well-polished, nearly fifteen minute game demo of The Last of Us.

The gameplay demo starts with Joel and Ellie driving down a highway congested with abandoned vehicles, eventually encountering another survivor who looks hurt and is limping towards their pickup truck. Surprisingly, Joel hits the accelerator and just before he barrels into the survivor, he pulls out a gun and shoots at Joel - missing Joel and only breaking the windshield.

With this immediate threat behind them, Joel doesn't have time to react as another survivor in the group rolls a bus downhill towards...

Sony to Ditch Cell Processor for PlayStation 4 (PS4) Console?

1150°
111w ago - Following up on our previous article, today Kotaku (linked above) reports that according to inside sources Sony may be ditching the Cell Processor for the PlayStation 4 console.

Below are the details, to quote: "The PlayStation 4 will not use Sony's Cell processor nor any possible successor to the vaunted chipset that was introduced to the world through the PlayStation 3, gaming industry sources tell Kotaku.

What we're hearing from sources follow a Forbes rumor last week that chip-maker AMD would make the graphics chip for a PS4, a shift from the PS3's use of a graphics chip from AMD rival Nvidia.

The abandonment of the Cell architecture would thrill the many game developers who have struggled with the complex chipset, but it could also be viewed as the admission of a mistake.

Cell was the pet project of PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi, who dreamed that the chip- a "Power Processing Element" married to eight "Synergistic Processing Elements"- would make the PS3 the most impressive gaming console ever. He spoke of a home equipped with multiple devices that were powered by Cell, all of them linking to each other to increase the computational power driving any...

111w ago - Sony Product Marketing Manager Wilson Cheng has officially welcomed fans to the year 2048 in the new WipEout 2048 video game on PlayStation Vita today!

To quote: WipEout 2048 on PS Vita takes us 36 years into the future, offering a glimpse at the birth of anti-grav racing - a fictional sport that has become synonymous with PlayStation.

Take a look at our new trailer and pay close attention at the start for an impression of what two WipEout ships squaring up on the streets of modern Britain might look like.

In keeping with the theme, here are a few words from Mick Hocking, Vice President for Liverpool, Evolution and London studios, on where he thinks gaming will be in 2048.

Mick is largely responsible for the creation and development of such series as WipEout, MotorStorm and SingStar, and is well placed discuss where we have been and, crucially, where we are heading.

At gamescom you appeared as part of a panel looking at the shape of gaming in 2021. The latest WipEout game is set in 2048; what will gaming be like then?

Mick Hocking: Well the pace of change is already so fast. Just look at the advances from PSP to PS Vita. In just seven years we have added touch screens,...
