PlayStation Network: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

50°
332w ago - Digital games downloads for consoles are in a fascinating position right now. We've previously discussed the state of console downloadable games - as well as a more detailed discussion of royalty rates for Xbox Live Arcade.

But the state of PlayStation Network for indie games is significantly less-discussed - actually, for some potentially interesting reasons. A starting point would be this interview with Sony's Scott Steinberg conducted at GDC, discussing Microsoft's announcement of Xbox Live Community Games. Steinberg's response to that:

"I thought it was interesting in the sense that what they were talking about we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN and giving smaller, start-up, entrepreneurial developers the chance to get in and make their games available on the PSN."

Well, yes and no. The biggest issue here - and what I find somewhat disingenuous of Sony - is that Microsoft is trying hard and genuinely to open up its platform to everyone (though they do have significant XBLA-related royalty issue and game complexity/submission headaches to work through).

And Sony is trashing them on the basis of PSN - which is actually somewhat of a closed platform right now, save some inspired and to-be-lauded cherrypicking.

[PS3NEWS] CoD4 Clan Tag Project!

200°
340w ago - As a means of expanding the site I though it would be a good idea if we set up a [PS3NEWS] CoD4 Clan Tag. This would raise awareness of the site online and increase the community spirit within the members of the site.

Members could flaunt their commitment to the site and we could set up Clan-based matches online. We could also set up a STICKY Forum thread with a list of [PS3NEWS] Clan members PSN IDs so that you can easily find friends who are part of it and add them to your friends list.

If anyone would be intrested in such a idea the please post in the Forum thread linked to this article (or HERE) with your PSN ID and if we get enough interest then it may be something we would consider in the near future.

Free gift from SONY for PSN users

550°
342w ago - In an official post on the au.playstation.com Web site, Sony is intending to give away some sort of free prize in an attempt to encourage PS3 users to play online via the PSN.

There are no official statements as to what the prize could be, although I guess it will probably be a free game of the PSN or such like. (see quote below)

"In the month of March we thought we'd show you all how much we appreciate having you as part of the Online Community by giving you a prize just for logging on and taking part on the selected nights!

Simply play online on any of the following nights between 6pm - 8pm AEST for your chance to win although you will need to get in quick as we only have a limited number of prizes.

Resistance: FoM Network Update Vulnerability

100°
345w ago - As you know, the Resistance: Fall of Man game updates via PlayStation Network. The resident PS3 Devs (Subdub and Gigi) discovered this nearly 6 months ago and others (Placa, to name just one) soon after, it's just another rehash of the old Warhawk method (detailed here and here), but more constrained.

For example, using the Warhawk hole users could change directories, in the R:FOM one you can't. In layman's terms, it means this R:FOM method is even more limited/useless than the Warhawk one was. Of course to those who just recently discovered it- this is being incorrectly labeled as something useful when it sadly isn't at all.

However, since Sony plugged the Warhawk hole in a past Firmware Update, most of the devs opted to keep quiet until tonight... as now this hole will certainly be addressed in an upcoming Firmware Update as it is indeed a security issue to Sony.

It's a fairly simple method. Using your favorite DNS "hijack" method, or proxy server redirect download-prod.online.scea.com...

PSN sales go from zero to hero - Sony "surprised"

50°
346w ago - A recent charge in users of the online PlayStation Network has surprised even Sony, SCEE president and CEO David Reeves says.

It seems the PSN has reaped the benefits of the recent turn of fortunes for the PS3, as Reeves stated: "One thing that has surprised us is in the Network purchases and the general level of interest that has been shown around the Network business."

He continues: "We've gone from zero to almost double-digit millions in terms of what people have purchased in euros.

"We've now got about two million PSN registrations. That's about 40 per cent of users. We've also had around 33 million downloads, which is a huge number. And we've got 25 stores up and running across the PAL territories," he told MCV.

Things should pick up even further when Sony unleashes its PSN virtual world, Home, later this year.
