Play Team Fortress 2 Against Valve on Friday

50°
375w ago - The folks at Valve? Why, they're the kind of guys you can just kick back with. Relax. Have a beer. Frag. You'll get the opportunity to do at least one of those things this Friday, as the company announced an open invitation for Team Fortress 2 players to take on the minds behind The Orange Box.

This Friday, October 19, from 3-7:00PM PST (6-10 EST), those with Gold subscriptions can take on the team and chat with them about tips and strategies for the game. To participate seems simple enough; just add the following Gamertags to your friends list:

  • gamewithdev1 (Matt W.- Level Designer)
  • ValveArtist1 (Matthew S. - Artist)
  • ValveAnim (Matthew R. - Animator)
  • ValveProg1 (Vitaliy - Programmer)
  • ValveProg2 (Adrian - Programmer)
  • ValveProg3 (Kerry - Programmer)
  • ValveProg4 (Robin - Programmer)
  • ValveProg5 (Jim - Programmer)
  • ValveLevelDes2 (Dave - Level Designer)
  • ValveArtist2 (Nick - Artist)
  • ValveLevelDes3 (Scott - Level Designer)
  • ValveProg6 (David - Programmer)
  • ValveWriter (Chet - Writer)

One might question the sanity of putting a Gamertag publicly out there. Luckily, most of these seem fairly generic and are probably set up for occasions such as this one. Just add the tags...

    Team Fortress 2 Beta Begins

    100°
379w ago - Last night a gaggle of old-school Team Fortress Classic fans flocked to Steam for their first shot at playing Team Fortress 2, a "beta" only available to those who have pre-ordered The Orange Box through Valve's download service. Unfortunately, as tends to happen with these anticipated downloads, there were some hiccups in the process.

The problem began early when Team Fortress 2 became the first Orange Box game available for download. The rush to Valve's servers was unprecedented, meaning that many excited gamers got a disappointing "Our servers are currently too full" message when trying to pre-load the game. Further issues throughout the night were dutifully chronicled by ShackNews.

At one point well past midnight for most eagerly awaiting players, Valve's Erik Johnson stopped into the ShackNews chatroom to leave this update on the source of the delay:

"We're really close, just a few issues with the Linux server. We just released the Win32 server, so if people are running those, they can get started. If we don't make it with linux in the next hour or two, we'll just fire away with what we have and get linux out as soon as we can."

Whatever the problems, Valve got them worked out eventually, leaving several hours to play before people had to start leave for work. Congrats to...
