8 More PS3 tricks Sony doesn't tell you

50°
361w ago - Just bought a Sony PlayStation 3? Then you've not maxed out the power of your new uber-console until you've downloaded the latest firmware and dabbled with the following techniques... Following on from our previous 10 PS3 tricks Sony doesn't tell you article, Digital Home brings you another batch of tips.

1) Customizing your PS3
Try out the downloadable examples of PS3's new Themes - the alternative desktops, menus and fonts for your PS3 that have been enabled since the recent 2.0 firmware update. Read on through this article for our tips on how to transfer them to your PS3. You can even make your own Themes. All you'll need is Sony's PC-only design software, which is available for free.

2) Make thousands of new PS3 Friends
Taken a shine to someone you've played against online? They'll be in your Players Met menu. Or if you just want to make loads of new friends fast, then go to www.gamewith.us/ps3 and to find thousands of names to hit up and try.

3) Mastering removable media
The PS3 is compatible with many different file types, playing and displaying just about anything you can throw at it. The full list is as follows: (video) MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, AVI, Motion JPEG, AVCHD, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC - DivX and Xvid coming soon; (audio) MP3, WMA, WAV, Audio CD,...

50°
361w ago - Sony has launched a revamped version of its PlayStation 3 Web site over at PlayStation.com with the slogan of 'Unleash the most advanced system around' being clearly displayed.

Once you click start, there are tabs to the guts, the controller, the network, beyond games, and the gallery. Cool stuff indeed!

Caprice32 PSP v4.2.0.0 released!

50°
361w ago - Uberjack has ported Ulrich Doewich's original Amstrad CPC emulator Caprice32 to PSP. The PSP port is written in C/C++ and uses GU (Graphical Utility toolkit) for rendering.

Download: Caprice32 for FW 1.5 / Caprice32 for CFW

Caprice32 4.2.0.0 is the latest addition to the collection of emulators. It's an Amstrad CPC emulator, and is my second choice for a port. My initial attempt was to port Arnold, which is a (arguably) more accurate emulator, but due to its poor performance on the PSP (~15 fps), the idea was scrapped.

Caprice32 is a lot faster, though the rendering subsystem used in the current version is from version 4.1.0, for performance reasons. If/when the renderer is optimized, the PSP port will be updated to reflect the change.

Current version is also missing ZIP file support - this will be implemented if enough people express interest.

Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3 has gone gold for North America!

50°
361w ago - From Mark Rein of Epic Games: The PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 has gone gold! We got news last night that Unreal Tournament 3 has been approved by SCEA and has been released to North American manufacturing.

Midway has started talking to retailers to figure out exact timing and they will have a formal announcement early next week when everyone is back from the Thanksgiving holiday. My guess is that Midway will start shipping the title to North American retailers on Monday December 10th and it could show up in stores as early as December 11th but more likely toward the middle of that week.

I think PS3 owners are going to really enjoy UT3 this holiday so make sure you get it on your shopping list!

For PAL territories, specifically UK and Europe, we have a few localization-related tasks to complete and then we should be starting the certification process pretty soon. My best guess is early next year (January or February) for the game to ship over there.

Call of Duty 4 PS3 Firmware problems resolved!

100°
361w ago - As expected, Infinity Ward has confirmed that the problems of the PS3 version of Call of Duty 4 following the release of firmware v2.01 are now over and done with.

They announced that gamers should no longer be receiving error messages or any other issues related to the firmware update in the game and they thanked for everyone letting them know so they could get the issued resolved efficiently.

The actual fix is separate to a forthcoming patch for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions which promised optimisation of the multiplayer experience. However patch v1.2 for the PC is available to grab from InfinityWard.com.
