339w ago - SCEE refused to be drawn on details of Firmware 2.30 this morning, following yesterday's confirmation that the PS3 software update would be needed to use the new version of PlayStation Store, to be released in mid-April in both the US and Europe.

To quote: We have made no official announcement of the details of Firmware 2.30 or exactly how the new Store will be deployed, a rep stated.

If the information released yesterday was correct, there should be a full Firmware release in the next two weeks, straight off the back of 2.20, which added BD-Live functionality only last week. Time will tell for sure...

339w ago - Yesterday we posted a rumor of a PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method found by dragula96. Many were skeptical as it was announced the day before April Fool's Day, however, today we are happy to confirm the only fools were those who dubbed it as "fake" :P

Courtesy of dragula96, here is the PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept along with related info and a new video detailing how it was done! Please NOTE (as suspected in the previous comments) this is a UT3 Mod and not true PS3 homebrew (running unsigned code), however, it is an excellent accomplishment in itself.

Microsoft Owns Patent for In-Game Custom Soundtracks

650°
339w ago - One of the most coveted features missing from the PlayStation 3 is the ability to use a custom soundtrack during gameplay. Movement has been made in this area with some games beginning to offer support, notably Super Stardust HD and High Velocity Bowling, but it's yet to be offered for all games.

Though many expect the inclusion to come when Sony supports an in-game version of PlayStation 3's cross media bar, the implementation of this feature might just stay with the developers, since Microsoft owns a patent for this very functionality.

Microsoft implemented the ability to play your own music during gameplay in their first gaming system, the Xbox. The functionality naturally moved over to the Xbox 360, where Microsoft was patiently waiting for a patent to go through.

The custom soundtrack patent was submitted well before the release of the 360, presumably with the intention to lock down the feature for the next generation. It wasn't issued until mid-2006, luckily just before the US/Japan release of the PlayStation 3.

The US patent named "Method and Apparatus for Creating and Playing Soundtracks in a Gaming System" appears to cover any application that allows users to create soundtracks using...

LittleBigPlanet story of new originality

250°
339w ago - When a studio start to make a video game in the 80's they didn't face any complication; because choosing a new idea was easy due to every idea at that time was an original ...

ideas like "Mario" a character that can prove for anyone that a video game series can't be killed by the producer if he know how to create new ideas for it...

The same thing come to our mind when you think about MGS series where "Snake" represent a solider that does not care about anything for the sake of his mission, the always new story & the new technology makes the games fresh to its fans. The list goes on & on and if we need examples for the topic of originality we will need Documentary to talk about them all.

This time sure will not last forever & sure the lack of originality time will come - that's if not already come -, a time where all producers seeking the customer's bucket, a time need a savior to save this great industry from the falling in the trap of the boredom!

In times like this we need a new ideas, a new games & a new original ones, & fortunately it is there in the horizon; a game that will make you laugh at the first sight ... a game will make every developer before gamers think about sharing ideas...
The game is "Little Big Planet" & its created studio is "Media...

50°
339w ago - Update: Sony has officially confirmed that the new PlayStation Store interface will also be coming to North America in mid-April.

To quote: Customers will be able to access, browse, shop and download content as usual prior to the store's re-opening. However, no additional downloadable content will be posted prior to then, including this Thursday, April 3rd, and next Thursday, April 10th.

Regularly scheduled content updates will resume with the Store's re-opening, at which time additional games and game-related items will be added, including the downloadable version of the highly-anticipated exclusive PS3 title Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Sony has released 3 sample images of the new design for the PlayStation store and said that "Content will be suspended for two weeks while the improvements are carried out but users can look forward to a special update in mid-April."

Sony has also reportedly told the media that the PlayStation Store face lift on PS3 will no longer use the PS3 Web browser, and will require new firmware upgrade version 2.30. The facelift is said to be much faster and cache all images correctly.

Sony has yet to confirm the facelift release...
