No Afrika for Europe, says Sony

50°
343w ago - A Sony Computer Entertainment Europe spokesperson has confirmed that it will not publish Rhino Studios' forthcoming "safari-simulator" Afrika in European territories, according to a Eurogamer report.

Initially announced during E3 2006, a coming soon teaser page for Afrika was recently launched on the company's Japanese website. Little is known about the title thus far, but from looking at the released screenshots it does appear to be a photography game in the vein of Pokemon Snap – except with, you know, real wildlife.

Note that this does not rule out another publisher picking up the title for a European release in the future. A North American release has yet to be announced.

Grid is the Most Exciting Racing Game Ever Made!

50°
343w ago - Speaking to ButtonBandits.com, Chief Game Designer Ralph Fulton has said that he believes forthcoming title GRID is the most exciting racing game ever made and that competing titles such as Forza and Gran Turismo are all about the car list rather than racing.

When asked if he was pleased development was now over and how he thought the final product had shaped up Ralph said "we have been desperate to get everything into it we wanted to get into it and I think we're all really pleased now the dust has settled on it with the product we've got.

I think it's a really exciting racing game, I'd go as far to say it's the most exciting racing game ever made, it looks stunning and I think were all going to take a well deserved rest after this."

On comments in forums and online on the number of cars in the game compared to competing titles such as Gran Tourismo and Forza, Ralph said "Yeah I can understand that. When you have competing games like Gran Turismo and Forza, which pride themselves on the car list, there all about the car list, that's their focus. I know Turn 10 have been quite open about the fact that Forza is just really a car list. Which is great for them.

Does it make sense for Codemasters to try and do the...

PlayStation Portable Still King in Slow Sales

50°
343w ago - Another week has gone by, which means we should take another look at the situation of hardware and software sales in Japan. Research firm Media Create has again posted the numbers for the week that ended on May 23 and we'll be serving up a bit of analysis alongside the figures.

Both hardware and software sales registered a drop in the analyzed interval, but the latter suffered much more than gaming consoles in terms of sales. The PlayStation Portable seems to have an iron grip on the first spot in sales, with a bit over 70,000 consoles sold, which registered as both a win and as a loss, because it sold over 19,000 units less than in the previous week.

The Nintendo Wii dropped even more, somewhere around 41,000 thousand, with over 25,000 units less than in the previous week, but it made it on second place, while the DS came in third, with a smaller drop than any of the top three consoles and sales of around 35,000 units.

The PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 2 from Sony have almost equal sales, of 7,701 for the first console and 7,022 for its last generation cousin. They both sold more than the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, which only managed to move 1,298 units during last week.

The week will be remembered as the moment when the Nintendo Wii managed to cross the 6 million sales barrier,...
