PS3 Flash Goodies - Part 3: The FULL PS3 Flash FileList

327w ago - With all of the recent news of PS3 retail "trickery" going on, this post got postponed (mind the pun) until today.

The image below is a snippet of the FULL PS3 Flash FileList for the PS3's /dev_flash. It should be noted that the PS3 also has a /dev_flash2 and /dev_flash3, which upon rare occasion is updated, however we are not able to access them yet due to some pesky Kernel/Hypervisor issues.

The list is quite juicy, as you can see there are plenty of RCO files, XML files, as well as assets. Even the PS3 Startup sounds are in the flash! Alongside the assets are plenty of SPRX's as well as a few SELF's.

In regards to dev_flash2 + dev_flash3, we can only speculate what is held on there, but the Kernel and HV need to reside somewhere, don't they?

In other news, watch later this week for something cool. We ripped an Official PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc, extracted a Demo of Ridge Racer 7, and after patching it, successfully got it running solely off an SD card, using the PS3's SD card slot.

And a note to those claiming to know why the Retail to Debug HDD Swap Method...

Next-Gen Games: To HD or not to HD?

327w ago - With the Playstation 2 and the first Xbox being able to run select games in high definition, for example Grand Turismo 4 supported 1080i resolution. One would expect that in the age of 'next generation' consoles, the age of 1080p resolutions, that all games would, as a standard, support high definition.

Well it would appear that is not the case, with an increasing number of recent titles outputting native resolutions of lower than 720p. Such games are then up-scaled to meet this high-definition benchmark. On the one hand, what's the point of paying for 1080p TVs, consoles and all the HDMI related accessories when the games you're playing don't even qualify as 'high def?'

While the other argument is that whether this really matters, many of the games in question are actually some of the best lookers out there. And what's the harm in sacrificing a few lines of resolution to secure a stable frame-rate?

This debate has again reared its ugly head with the revelation that Playstation 3 exclusive HAZE's resolution is only 576p, thus leaving it to the Playstation 3 itself to upscale the game to meet minimum high def standards.

Recent news has also revealed that the Playstation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV only runs at 640p, while the Xbox 360 version natively reaches...
 

What In-Game Communication Really Means?

327w ago - In-Game communication has become an important feature to console gamers. The expansion of online gameplay is a huge part of it. When the PS3 was first announced, many wondered if it would come with features such as in-game communication and custom soundtracks.

To the sadness of many, it did not. Why? Because Sony did something that the other console did not, leave it in the hands of the Developers. This will not be an article bashing developers or cursing Sony. It will simply explain my views on the subject.

Let me start off first by saying that I have no need for in-game communication or custom soundtracks. Why? Because I can simply mute my television to hear the music that I want or send a text message to someone that I really want to talk to. The majority of the individuals on my friend list are people that I have never spoken to or even played a game with.

Amazing? No, I seem to find that to be quite common with many gamers. I also enjoy the game music for the most part. Currently, I have a hard time thinking of a game that has music that I absolutely detest. This is just my opinion of course.

When it was leaked/announced months ago that in-game communication would be coming in update 2.4 this summer, Playstation fans went crazy. It not only gave them a feature that so many...
 

MGS4 Limited Edition PS3 Bundle Ordering A Huge Disaster

328w ago - Update: It appears that Konami may have dropped the $500 insurance charge and that pre-orders have temporarily ceased. The Konami online store asks customers to "Please check back tomorrow (May 20, 2008), when we will make available more stock for pre-orders."

One might think that after the registration disaster that was the Metal Gear Online beta sign up process that Konami would be well prepared for the pre-ordering onslaught that awaited them today.

Surprisingly, it wasn't, resulting in what can be be described as a clusterfuck of massive proportions as many gamers attempted to order their Metal Gear Solid 4 limited edition PlayStation 3 bundle.

In addition to tacking on a $500 insurance charge–which we're told is mandatory and refundable, though we can't confirm right now–we've yet to read of a single successful check out for the "gun metal" version of the console. As of right now, the Konami store is throwing a 503 error, most likely due to the heavy volume of MGS4 fans trying desperately to buy their PS3s.

Anyone out there lucky enough to secure one yet? Thanks to the many tipsters who sent this one in.
