The Orange Box PS3: Open Letter from Petitioners

50°
328w ago - Gamer Double-J has written an open letter to the world, telling about his frustration against Valve/EA, and citing the numerous issues encountered in the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box.

Here is the letter: "Dear Madam or Sir,

I am writing to you today in the hopes you might be able to help myself and thousands of others with the problems we are experiencing with the PlayStation 3 version of Valve/Electronic Arts The Orange Box.

The problems concerning The Orange Box for the PS3 are two-fold. First, we are dealing with numerous bugs, glitches, and server issues that have rendered the game unplayable at times and have remained since the game was originally released in October 2007.

More troublesome is the fact that our many attempts to contact Valve and EA through traditional channels –telephone, e-mail, and regular post– have fallen upon deaf ears. In a complete disregard for the large community of gamers who are experiencing these issues, in attempting to seek answers, the consumer support divisions of each company have repeatedly rejected pleas for help.

To begin, allow me to elaborate on some of the issues. While both the PC and XBox 360 versions of the game have been updated several times since release, PS3 players only have received is a generic...

Sony PS3 catching up to Wii sales

50°
328w ago - Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Wii game console once again outsold Sony Corp's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) PlayStation 3 in Japan in June, but its lead is fading, a game magazine publisher said.

Wii outsold the rival console by 1.7-to-1, making it the No1 game console for a seventh consecutive month, Enterbrain said, but that was well short of the 6-to-1 lead the Wii had in May.

The launch in June of Konami Corp's (9766.T: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) highly anticipated 'Metal Gear Solid 4' for the PS3 helped stir demand for the Sony machine, the magazine said.

Nintendo sold 235,990 units of its Wii console in the five weeks ended June 29, while sales of the PS3 came to 139,494 units, Enterbrain said. Microsoft Corp's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) Xbox 360 trails the pack, with sales of 10,964 units.

Despite its strong performance in June, the PS3 has a lot of catching up to do in total sales around the world. Sony has sold 12.85 million units of its latest console worldwide by the end of March, or just half the Wiis sold since the rival consoles were both launched in late 2006.

For handheld game players, Sony sold 274,131 of its PlayStation Portable during the five-week period,...

Rumor: Wal-Mart Memo says 40GB PS3 to be replaced in August

500°
329w ago - Update: Adjusted for the possibility that "replaced" could mean basic changes to 40GB model, like the addition of DualShock 3.

A Wal-Mart spreadsheet allegedly listing products that the company is having difficulty stocking states that the 40GB PS3 "will be replaced with [a] new model in early August."

We received this sheet from an employee that's sent us solid information in the past though s/he can't confirm the origin of the note that the model will be replaced. Of course, in the eternal battle over semantics, "replaced" could simply mean some minor tweaks to the model and the addition of the DualShock 3.

For those keeping track, if the 40GB version actually ceases production it would be the third version of the PS3 to do so. Let's take a trip down memory lane: The 60GB PS3 was last seen in late 2007 roaming the plains of retail (some still speak of finding them in random places today) and the 20GB was officially declared dead in early 2007 after it went missing from retail for months.

Perhaps next week's E3 will shed some light on the fate of the 40GB unit.

PS3 Firmware Update v2.41 brings new look for Platinum Trophy

100°
329w ago - It appears that today's PS3 Firmware Update v2.41 has brought along with it a new sporty-looking Platinum trophy.

While Platinum trophies used to look like a bizarre purple crown, the new version (pictured below) looks more like a sports trophy made of crystal.

To quote from Radiskull's comment HERE below:

"I've noticed 2 things with this 2.41 so far. The in-game XMB lag seems to be gone (at least for me), and the Platinum Trophy icon on the trophies page has a new look. It was previously a crown, and now it looks like a globe. Pic of it below."
