Analysts: PS2 Not Dropping To $99 Any Time Soon

250°
325w ago - Analysts have agreed that we won't see the PS2 dropped to $99 in the near future in the US as the demand is still high. One analyst believes that once the PS3 it is compelling content like 'Guitar Hero' and 'Rock Band' that keeps the demand for PS2s up.

To quote: On Thursday evening, Pachter left us a voicemail, in which he said:

The real reason we haven't seen a $99 PS2 is that demand hasn't dropped enough for Sony to justify the price cut. Compelling content like 'Guitar Hero' and 'Rock Band' keeps the demand for PS2s up. I saw a 'Guitar Hero' PS2 bundle at Best Buy a couple of months ago for $189.

They're discounting 30 bucks if you buy the two together. I think games like that – that are kind of a one-off for people who haven't played a PS2 game before and will [make them] say 'Hey, I can buy a PS2, why not?' – [will help keep the price where it is.]

As long as you've got a couple hundred thousand PS2s a month selling, Sony doesn't feel compelled to make the cut. I think you will get the cut, because, frankly, Sony wants to differentiate the PS3. I think the PS3 comes down to $349, maybe $299 if they can afford it.

But they've just been selling four to five million PS2s a year in the U.S. so there's no reason to cut the price...

Press Release:

The return of Bishi Bashi Special! Classic Konami PSOne title marks publisher's first download release via PlayStation Network in Europe Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has released its first title available via Sony's PlayStation Network download store in the form of PSOne classic, Bishi Bashi Special.

Originally released in 2000, Bishi Bashi Special is the definitive party game, and comprises over 80 fun mini-games - each madder than the last. Converted from two of Konami's Japanese arcade machines - Super Bishi Bashi and Hyper Bishi Bashi - the compilation is designed to test the player's reactions, timing and stamina.

As the name suggests, some involve simply bashing the controller buttons as quickly as possible, while others require pixel-perfect movement and extreme hand-eye coordination. All, however, are tremendous fun and doubly so when played against a friend.

The events go by such names as Juggler Panic, Burger Girl, Ladder of...

GTA IV Online for PS3 is down!

50°
325w ago - If you are a proud owner of Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3, then you might not be so proud to know that the online multi-player mode is down. Or, at least it appears to be so for PS3 patrons.

Numerous players have received errors upon attempting to connect; this blogger included has not been able to get the multi-player to work.

An error message pops up: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again." Hopefully, Rockstar can get things running soon. Wouldn't want to upset the GTA IV crowd, if you know what we mean.

In the meantime, get back to the single player game. We'll keep you posted as we find out more.

Sierra Spring Break 08: Prototype plot inspired by Old Boy

50°
325w ago - Speaking to videogaming247 at the Sierra Spring Break 08 in Mallorca last week, Radical Entertainment marketing director Chris Hansell said that Prototype has been heavily influenced by the story of classic Korean movie, Old Boy.

"There are a huge number of influences," he said. "The guys who make this game love everything.

"Especially Old Boy where the main the main character does very bad things. But you see that really bad things that have happened to him before, so you have a kind of empathy with that character. So even though it's a dark story, there's a context as to why he's doing these terrible things."

All sounds very dark and broody, doesn't it?

Mega-violent super-mutant free-roamer Prototype is out on 360 and PS3 in the fourth quarter.
