GameSpy: PS3 is definitely beating 360 in some areas of online

50°
318w ago - It used to be the console war was a question of getting out the sliderule and measuring comparative polygon thoroughput. Now, however, gamers - and even developers - are much more likely to try to measure the relative performance of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo by the online features their consoles offer.

Few have as good a viewpoint on that particular battle as Todd Northcutt, GameSpy's director of technology. Thanks to the company's position as the exclusive online partner for the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, as well as its middleware licensing agreements with Sony and Microsoft, Northcutt works closely with each manufacturer.

"I don't think you've seen the same pace of innovation from Microsoft as you have from Sony recently," he told Develop in a pre-E3 briefing. "It's been steadily improving the PlayStation 3 as an online gaming device and an entertainment device while the Xbox 360 has had its half yearly updates but there's nothing groundbreaking that's been released, other than a couple of changes to the marketplace."

"We have a really good relationship with Sony and it's great to see the evolution of the platform.

I think it's experienced a lot of evolution and in some places PlayStation 3 is definitely beating out Xbox."

As for the conventional...

Rumor: Hideo Kojima's account found on the PSN?

100°
318w ago - The following video shows that if you try and add the one and only Hideo Kojima as a friend via PSN, the ID is instantly transformed into Old Snake. Could this be Kojima's real account, or just a bit of fun?

To quote from runandgun: He's denied me like 20 times in 6 months.

It takes anywhere from hours to days to get denied... also I've seen a short video of a guy being accepted by Old Snake and the account playing Lost Planet. So it is most likely not a bot and instead someone's genuine account.

Man inexplicably brings touchscreen to the PSP

50°
318w ago - A certain jube808 has launched a quixotic quest to add a myriad of features to the PSP that he believes should've been there from the start, including beefed up battery life, a better control pad, and touchscreen support.

Think what you will of his aims, he certainly seems to have some hardware chops, as he's got a touchscreen up and running on the handheld.

So far he's just got a proof of concept keyboard, which works with a finger or a stylus, but the hope is to provide full touchscreen support for homebrew gaming.

80GB PS3 Official UK release date

100°
319w ago - Recently announced at E3, the 80GB PlayStation 3 finally has a release date in the UK, 29th August 2008, and will presumably be the same date across Europe. The new 80GB model will phase out the now older 40GB model while sharing the same features (or lack of) at the same price.

The PlayStation 3 80GB model does NOT feature:

* Backwards Compatibility with PS2 Games
* Memory Stick Card Readers
* SACD Playback
* Ethernet Cable
* 4 USB Ports, (The PS3 80GB model features 2)

It is also being bundled with a DualShock 3 rather than a SIXAXIS too, so if you were considering buying a PS3 then hold out just a little longer and grab yourself a great deal, and with the new platinum range which has just been released you'll be able to pick up some get PS3 titles for a decent price.
