Today rickylyh let us know Fixstars Corporation of Japan has released a free 14-day trial of CodecSys CE-10, an H.264 Software Encoder for use with Sony's PlayStation 3.

It was first announced a few months ago, and although Fixstars' English Site doesn't have the trial available yet it is expected sometime this month.

The CE-10 software gets installed on a PC, but allows users to access the power of the PS3 via OtherOS as a way of accelerating video encoding.

Cool news indeed, and let the speed tests begin!

Capcom to Lean on Sony's PS3 for Software Sales

258w ago - The latest financial report from Capcom revealed that they will be leaning on the PlayStation 3 in this fiscal year.

To quote: The third-party company expects to sell a combined 4.9 million software units with 10 new PlayStation 3 titles plan for the fiscal year of 2009-2010. This is way higher than the previous year in which the eight Capcom games on the PlayStation 3 sold a combined 1.75 million units.

In comparison, Capcom expects the Xbox 360 to sell 4.55 million units of software with 11 new titles during the same period. Despite having more new titles (14) than the other two the Nintendo Wii is only predicted to sell 2.20 million units, which seems a little low since Monster Hunter 3 should be released before March 31, 2010.

Sony also got the upper hand on the competition in the handheld market. Capcom expects to sell 2.45 million units of software on the PSP over the span of eight new titles. Capcom is only planning for the Nintendo DS to sell 2.1 million units despite releasing 29 new titles on it over the same period.

271w ago - Just two days ago Sony PSP hacker Dark_AleX released LEDA: Legacy Software Loader BETA v0.1 for PSP.

For those who haven't been following, LEDA integrates into M33 Custom Firmware to let you run your old 1.0 and 1.5 kernel-based homebrew apps.

It also works on the PSP Slim, and today he has updated it to v0.2 with the following changes:

An update to improve compatibility. Still no perfect but this should run quite more homebrews than 0.1

Note: if you have plugins enabled, disable them before running installer. CFW Folder Blocker v1.0 in concrete is known to cause problems with leda installer.

272w ago - Sony PSP hacker Dark_AleX has released LEDA, the Legacy Software Loader today. LEDA integrates into M33 Custom Firmware to let you run your old 1.0 and 1.5 kernel-based homebrew apps. It also works on the PSP Slim.

Download: LEDA: Legacy Software Loader BETA v0.1 for PSP

From the ReadMe file:

Description: LEDA is a program that integrates into M33 custom firmwares to let some old 1.00/1.50 homebrew to run. To avoid waste of memory, leda is only loaded when necessary. Current compatibility is unknown as is still in beta. Although it may work on previous m33 versions, it has only be tested on 5.00 M33.

The development of LEDA doesn't mean that development of 1.50 kernel addon will be ceased. 1.50 addon is very easy to code, and thus it will still be coded for almost full 1.5 compatibility, but LEDA has some advantages over it.

Advantages:
- It works on slim too
- It doesn't need much flash space
- You don't need to care about which folder your homebrew is. LEDA first tries to load the homebrew program normally. If it works, then the homebrew is a 3.XX+ one, and leda terminates itself to not waste RAM. Otherwise, leda does some patches to load the 1.0/1.5 homebrew.
- Unlike 1.50...

Rumor: PS2 Software Emulator Coming to Sony's PlayStation 3

650°
275w ago - To compliment an article from earlier today, a member of NeoGAF known as mephesta claims he was told by a Sony rep that they may be eventually be putting out a PS2 emulator for the PlayStation 3 console.

Apparently, as the PS2 has about one year left on its life cycle, we shouldn't expect Sony to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility.. and they will just go out and get a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles.

To quote: The rumor comes from NeoGAF member Meph who recounts what was told to him by a Sony representative (openly described as a 'tool'). The story goes that Sony might be willing to buy a PlayStation 2 emulator for the future.

"He mentioned that since the PS2 has just 1 year left on its life-cycle not to expect them to develop anything new with regards to backwards compatibility," says Meph.

"He then leans in and lowers his voice, as if to tell me some deep dark secret and mentions that Sony may be willing to potentially buy a PS2 emulator to put in future consoles."
