Video: Toy Soldiers: War Chest on PS4 - PlayStation 4 Hands-on

50°
5w ago - Sony Social Media Senior Manager Sid Shuman shared a PS4 video today showcasing Toy Soldiers: War Chest going hands-on with PlayStation 4 below.

To quote: If I'm frank, I wasn't really sure I was the right fit for this game. Mostly because I'd never played the earlier entries in the (well-respected) Toy Soldiers series, but also because toy collector culture doesn't much tickle my fancy.

So imagine my surprise when I went hands-on with Toy Soldiers: War Chest on PS4 and discovered not just a clever fusion of tower defense and third-person action, but a fiendishly addictive vortex that quickly reduced me to shrieking "kablammo! kablammo! boooosh!" while I bombarded hordes of rainbow ponies with mortars. Watch our new video above for the full story.

At its core, Toy Soldiers: War Chest is a classic tower defense game set in three-dimensional environments, a nice upgrade from the static 2D backdrops of most TD titles. You'll set up turrets in between waves of approaching enemies, feverishly upgrading and repairing them to prevent being overrun.

You earn gold by slaying incoming enemy hordes, then spend the proceeds on new specialized turrets (anti-armor, anti-infantry, anti-air) and fancy upgrades that increase your attack range, damage and so forth. So far, so good - it's...

Introducing Pillar: A PS4 Psychological Minigame Collection

50°
5w ago - Pillar Designer / Programmer / Musician Michael Hicks officially introduced Pillar, a PS4 psychological minigame collection to PlayStation 4 fans today!

To quote: Hey everyone! My name is [Register or Login to view links], and I'm the designer/programmer/musician for a game I'm announcing today called [Register or Login to view links].

Pillar is a collection of minigames, where each game represents a different type of personality that we find in people. For example, there are introverts who lose energy from being around people, extroverts who expand energy from interacting with others, characters who make decisions with logic, characters who make decisions with feeling and so on. My goal is to express these traits entirely through gameplay mechanics.

Pillar was born out of a confluence of ideas: the first influence I had was from [Register or Login to view links], a movie that examines multiple characters with different storylines but seamlessly weaves them all together.

I realized this is something video games can do too but I've never seen it utilized in a way that's as powerful as this film. For instance, in some games there are characters that have unique abilities, like swimming underwater or...

Video: Adapt to Survive in Natural Doctrine on PS4, PS3, PS Vita

50°
6w ago - NIS America Marketing Coordinator David Alonzo shared a video today stating adventurers must adapt to survive in Natural Doctrine on PS4, PS3 and PS Vita platforms.

Below are the details, to quote: Greetings, adventurers! Your faithful Prinny David here, and I've been locked away honing my strategy for something really big - the hardcore tactical strategy game, Natural Doctrine!

Coming out September 23rd on PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, this game's sure to be a challenge and a half, even for the most weathered strategists. And with cross play and cross save functionality, there's no limit to where you can take this game!

The trailer gives folks a bit of an idea of how they can customize their experience with Natural Doctrine, and how they can adapt to survive it. The game's got a lot of depth that isn't immediately apparent, and we give a glimpse of some of that here.

The trailer starts by showing the game's difficulty. Obviously, it's hard, and that's not something we wanted to shy away from, but it's not a game that's unbeatable, and a lot of us here in the office have managed to make it through the final stage.

But we died a lot on the way. A lot. We want people to know that, but with that...

Sony on How Real-life Conflict Inspired Far Cry 4 for PlayStation 4

50°
6w ago - Sony's Tom Wallis revealed details today on how real-life conflict inspired Far Cry 4 for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 platforms.

To quote: [Register or Login to view links] is the upcoming first-person shooter from developer Ubisoft Montreal.

Set in the fictional Himalayan country of Kyrat, this nation torn apart by war draws heavily from real-world locations to make the game feel authentic.

We caught up with Mark Thompson, narrative director, and Alex Hutchinson, creative director, to find out how visiting Nepal to meet people who actually fought in the civil war helped to inspire the development of Far Cry 4.

"One of the first things we did was to write down a list of different animals to include in the game," Mark told us when we met up with the team at Ubisoft recently in Montreal.

"We also made a list of environment features we wanted. From that we looked at locations where the two would make sense, and we came to the Himalayas. We needed to find somewhere that had a history of conflict - somewhere that could be politically unstable - the kind of place that you would go to that was on the edge of the map. Places that are referred to as 'failed states.'"

The difference...
