Will PlayStation 3 Become the Ultimate FPS Console?

350°
284w ago - So after weighing in on Resistance 2, it started to dawn on us: is this now the franchise to beat in the FPS genre? And with the impending Killzone 2, is the PlayStation 3 now home to the best FPS experiences on the planet?

Typically, Microsoft has been responsible for the best FPS experiences ever since the original Xbox launched way back in 2001 with Halo. Even multiplatform FPSs have been better on a Microsoft console, although we believe that trend will soon fade in this generation.

Earlier, developers simply didn't have a good handle on the PlayStation 3, but now, things are starting to come together and it appears it's Sony's machine that has the best to offer in the FPS genre. Xbox 360 loyalists will consistently turn to Halo 3, but although I am a big fan of that trilogy, the fact of the matter is that Resistance 2 is better.

Insomniac's initial effort, as good as it was, may not have been a "Halo killer," but the sequel most certainly is. Now, will there be a Halo 4? Even if there is, I will continue to give the edge to Resistance until I see something that changes my mind. After all, I was a little disappointed in Halo 3; clearly, that game was made more as a multiplayer attraction, and I didn't think much of the single-player campaign.

But R2 delivers big time in terms...

HD Netflix Streaming Comes to Microsoft's XBox 360 First

100°
285w ago - It's something you can't get on the Roku. Nor on LG's BD300. Nor on Samsung's P2500 / P2550 Blu-ray players. Nor through Netflix's own "Watch Instantly" portal.

It's high-def Netflix streaming, and it's coming first to Microsoft's Xbox 360. Yes friends, when the all new dashboard hits on November 19th, with it will come HD Netflix streaming for Xbox Live Gold members.

You should know that this is only a "soft launch" with about 300 titles available for now, and the litany of details you're surely craving simply aren't available at present time. At any rate, we'd say things just got a lot more interesting in the world of digital downloads, but there's really no need.

The real question is: when will everyone else follow suit, and how quickly can we expect current Netflix streamers to get the HD upgrade?

Far Cry 2 Comes Home Today, Launches in Home's Closed BETA

50°
287w ago - According to Bertrand Helias (Senior Producer, Far Cry 2) via PS Blog today, the Far Cry 2 Space is launching in PlayStation Home's closed BETA!

To quote: The space will invite players to dig deeper into the game's vast African landscape. Users will have the opportunity to investigate in-game environments, including a bombed-out train station that has been converted into the ad hoc office of Reuben Oluwagembi, a journalist caught in the middle of the propaganda conflict between the warring UFLL and APR factions.

In Reuben's office, you'll be able to analyze an interactive map of the game world to strengthen your knowledge of the Far Cry 2 environment to develop your strategy for future missions. Locate guard posts, safe houses to save the progress of your game, weapon shops to buy new weapons, and bus stations to expedite your travel across the expansive land.

Players will have access to Reuben's files containing various pictures, articles, and dossiers that will delve deeper into the background of The Jackal, as well as that of the other warlords and opposing factions. And finally, multiplayer game of Mancala that uses bullets as game pieces will be fully playable.

Hope you enjoy it and be sure to look out for new features as we'll be updating the space regularly.

The 28 Best Video Games Still to Come in 2008

100°
288w ago - Yes folks, it's October, which means that the crazy end-of-year games rush has begun. A boggling number of games are due out over the next few months, so let us guide you towards the titles we really think you should be keeping an eye on.

Remember though, most of these recommendations are based on previews, so wait until the final review verdict before picking any of them up.

1. Animal Crossing: City Folk - Wii, 16th Nov US, December EU

It might not be the great hardcore hope Reggie claims it to be, but the Wii version of Animal Crossing certainly promises to be the definitive entry in the series. It's got proper online play, mic and keyboard communications, Mii support, a new city area full of customisable gear to pick up and connectivity between Wii and DS. In other words, it's got everything Animal Crossing always needed. AC is one of those games you either love or just don't get at all, but if you're the former, this will be a must.

2. Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts - Xbox 360, 11th Nov US, 14th Nov EU

Part platformer, part puzzler, part driving game, part Garry's Mod, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is a quintessentially Rare reinvention of its classic bear and bird franchise. Some might miss the pure platforming of the original games, but the sheer level...

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews Start to Come Out

100°
294w ago - The first couple of review scores for Star Wars: the Force Unleashed have made their way onto the Interwebs thanks to GameRankings.com and various forums.

The Official Xbox Magazine gave a score of a 7.5/10, calling it an "Entertaining story," but "Is less polished than the Jedia Knight game."

The US version of the Official PlayStation Magazine gave a little lower score at 3.5/5. At this time, we couldn't find an article for OPM.

The Nintendo Power review also gave it a 7.5/10 saying, "You can hack and slash with your lightsaber, which isn't as satisfying as I'd hoped." Isn't that the only reason why we would buy that version?

Although the scores are more positive than negative, it is disappointing to see such an average score from a game we are excited to play. We still feel the game will have an unbelievable story-line and it could be worth purchasing just for that, even if the gameplay is not up to par as some others.
