90w ago - Sony Senior Producer Harvard Bonin has shared a video today of the finishing touches being put on Starhawk for PS3 below.
To quote: Recently, the PlayStation.Blog paid a visit to our good friends and partner LightBox Interactive in Austin, Texas during SXSW.
While there, we unlocked the vault and loosened the chains on Mr. Dylan Jobe, LightBox President and CEO. That can be a very dangerous prospect as we never know what we're going to get, it's also fun to hear about all the details on the Starhawk front, including how the public beta affected the game's development. The teams at LightBox and Santa Monica are working incredibly hard to make sure the Starhawk experience is everything the fans deserve.
To give you some insight into that process, Dylan has some thoughts about "crunch time," fans, and game-typy stuff. Starhawk is headed in for a landing and this is a cool look into the mind of a developer at the peak of his game. Check it out!
94w ago - Sony Senior Producer Harvard Bonin has announced that the Starhawk PS3 Beta officially opens to US PSN users today and Europeans tomorrow, with some PlayStation 3 tips available below!
To quote: We're happy to announce (remind) everyone that the Starhawk Multiplayer Beta is open to ALL COMERS today, Tuesday, February 21st only on the PlayStation Network!
You don't have to "like" us on Facebook, you don't have to "accept a special offer" and you don't have to sign up for any service (that is, except for the PlayStation Network free service)! Everyone is welcome to join! Just check the PlayStation Store and prepare yourself for a good time!
In the coming weeks we'll be upgrading the Beta a ton. You can expect a new map, new vehicles, new weapons, 32-player max matches and more. Remember, this is still a beta, not a demo. We are actively finding and fixing problems – and we need your feedback!
The Starhawk Beta will not last forever. When we're done testing it will go "bye-bye"... and so I wrote a poem to illustrate my point...
The Starhawk Serenade
If you don't try Starhawk you'll be sad,
While your friends are having fun you'll be mad,
It's such an easy download,
Your head may explode!
122w ago - Sony Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman has shared a Starhawk PlayStation 3 Q&A interview today entitled Building Better Worlds for fans.
To quote: Starhawk is a rare beast - a big-budget shooter with a story to tell. That tale centers squarely on Emmett Graves, a reluctant protagonist saddled with some serious baggage.
I spoke with Harvard Bonin, Sony Santa Monica Studios' Senior Producer on Starhawk, to try and get a grip on what makes Emmett Graves tick.
PSB: A gigantic multiplayer shooter that includes RTS elements has been seen as something of a gaming Holy Grail. Which part did you conceptualize first – shooter, or RTS?
Harvard Bonin, Senior producer, Sony Santa Monica Studios: At first, we just wanted to do a sequel to Warhawk and set it in space - just bring a new setting, story, and a solo campaign. But we realized that we needed to bring something extra, so when LittleBigPlanet came out, we thought, "wouldn't it be cool to make your own shooter?"
So, we tried it, and we actually have test levels back at the office. Instead of LittleBigPlanet giving you these macro tools, we gave you these almost jigsaw puzzle pieces – anything that you saw in a level, you could've built in this early prototype.
125w ago - LightBox Interactive President Dylan Jobe has shared a video today spotlighting Starhawk for PlayStation 3 from this year's Comic-Con event.
To quote: Comic-Con is just the perfect venue to talk about Starhawk's universe, our characters and the story that drives the Solo Campaign.
Here's a video that we captured from the game and shows how we tell story in the Starhawk. It's done with a really great kind of animated "wanted" poster style, punctuated with Rift Energy.
They're Emmett's memories. His Rift visions. They're being produced by a studio here in Austin, Powerhouse Animation (they worked on the Penny Arcade Adventures animations). We've also got some really cool tech that seamlessly blends between the animations and the game (as you can see in the video).
This really makes the solo experience smooth and buttery. We didn't want any experiential speed bumps in the solo campaign. You can sit down, start the game and smoothly flow from mission to mission with no loading screens!
So, yeah, we're having our Starhawk panel at Comic-Con on Sunday July 24th, 10am - 11am in room...
130w ago - In preparation for Comic-Con, SCEA Senior Producer Harvard Bonin has shared a video today for Starhawk PS3 Single-Player from E3 2011.
To quote: As expected, E3 2011 was crazy fun and a gamer's dream come true. Every year E3 gets bigger and badder but this year's show was special for us: we finally got to unveil our multiplayer Capture the Flag mode for Starhawk!
So far, the feedback has been great. Starhawk was nominated for a bunch of E3 awards, including Best Shooter, Best Multiplayer and Best PS3 Game from G4TV.
During E3, the PlayStation.Blog team streamed live demos for a host of PlayStation games, including this 20 minute-long Starhawk tour that really shows off one of our single-player missions. Check it out above!
Here are a some impressions from members of the press that played Starhawk at E3:
"What stuck out was the combat from the air, the power of the Hawks, and the surprisingly convenient ability to jump seats in a moving vehicle."
"We're definitely excited to see more of this game, including its extensive single-player campaign."
