29w ago - Following up on their previous updates, today Sony's SVP has given PlayStation 4 fans more insight into the PS4's noise level, power consumption, media performance and more below.

To quote from DualShockers.com (linked above): "Sony Computer Entertainment Japan and Asia Senior Vice president and Director of Business Unit 1 Masayasu Ito isn't as well known as Shuhei Yoshida between PlayStation fans, but given his technical role he's the best person to ask about some of the most technical aspects of the upcoming PS4.

Today he gaver some extremely interesting information about the console as part of an interview on the Japanese tech site AV Watch.

Here's a summary of the most relevant points:

  • While being always online is not necessary, a network connection is important to fully enjoy the features of the PS4.
  • The PS4 will initially act as a stand-alone web server for the PlayStation App. In the future there's the possibility of this to be expanded through the cloud, with the PS4 and PlayStation App interacting through the cloud, allowing cooperative...

PS4 Dev: PlayStation 4 System Rumored to Launch in November

750°
35w ago - Contrary to the previous rumor, today a Tiny Brains PS4 developer stated that the PlayStation 4 system will be launching in November, 2013.

Below are the details, to quote: If you’ve never heard of Tiny Brains before, it’s an upcoming title from Spearhead Games (made from ex-EA, Ubisoft, and Eidos devs) for the Xbox Live Arcade, PC, and PlayStation 4.

In a press release issued today showing off that Tiny Brains will be playable at PAX Prime, they also revealed that it would be released as “a PlayStation 4 launch title in November.” They later continued by saying, “However, PAX Prime attendees won’t have to wait until November to get their hands on PS4 controllers and play Tiny Brains: they can try a demo at the show in booth 6305.”

Before you take this as confirmation that the PlayStation 4 will launch in November (I’m still hoping for a shocking October launch), this could be them just taking previous launch history and guessing when the PlayStation 4 is releasing. Or maybe they know something we don’t and it’s true. Either way, we’ll just have to wait and see if anything happens at gamescom starting on Monday.

Sony PS4 / PlayStation 4 Rumored to Launch on October 21, 2013

750°
35w ago - Following up on the previous rumor, today an anonymous retailer schedule purports that the PlayStation 4 will be launching on October 21 although the PS4 was listed as an unnamed Sony console.

Below are the details, to quote: "Here's a juicy rumor for potential PlayStation 4 buyers. According to a NeoGaf user by the name of Nealand Liquor a listing for an unnamed Sony console notes the release date as October 21. Barring Sony working on a PlayStation 3 revision or a PS Vita 2, this release date falls within the rumored release window for the PlayStation 4.

Nealand, however, is persuaded that the listing is absolutely the PlayStation 4 and believes the release date to be officially confirmed by Sony. He states that in previous product release schedules revisions like slim consoles are listed by their official names, where new platforms like the Wii U, 3DS and Vita are only referenced as a Nintendo / Sony console. He also states that release dates, if unconfirmed, are listed as TBA. If a release date is listed, it has been confirmed by the product's company.

"Rumor: Our internal product release schedule from head office dropped yesterday and on Oct 21st an unnamed Sony console will...

PlayStation 4 / PS4 Developers Rumored to Access 7GB GDDR5 RAM

500°
53w ago - While it is currently rumored that Sony will unveil PlayStation 4 later this month of in early May, today PS4Daily (linked above) reports that while the PS4 will ship with 8GB of GDDR5 memory, developers will only have access to 7GB of RAM.

Below are the details, to quote: "The PlayStation 4 will ship with a massive 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, which is a huge upgrade compared to the current generation consoles. However, according to a PlayStation 4 developer PS4Daily spoke to, they have access to “only” 7 GB of RAM. The remaining 1 GB is reserved for the operating system and background tasks.

Sony showcased a lot of PlayStation 4 features during the unveiling in February. This includes deep social features running in the background, new sharing options where players can watch each other play, and background downloading of games. All this chews up quite a bit of memory. Still, having access to 7 GB of super-fast GDDR5 memory is a lot better than the 512 MB in the PS3.

Sony originally shipped dev kits to third party developers with only 4 GB RAM, and kept the true RAM amount secret from third party developers in order to keep it secret from Microsoft as well. Developers...
