58w ago - Many are aware Sony's PlayStation 4 video gaming console uses FreeBSD Open Source Software as outlined on Sony's site [Register or Login to view links], and today Software Engineer Don Olmstead briefly discusses WebGL / HTML5 and the PS4 while PS3 hacker kakarotoks confirms PS4 is running Webkit alongside preliminary PS4 Save Encryption from flynhigh09 as detailed below.

From Don Olmstead, to quote: "Now that the #PS4 has been released I can finally start talking about my piece of the puzzle.

When you login to your PS4 you are running #WebGL code. The PlayStation Store, the Music and Video Applications, as well as a good chunk of UX are all rendered within the browser.

I spent a good amount of time tuning our WebGL rendering engine, and I will be speaking at +SFHTML5 about how to optimize WebGL usage within the context of that work. There will be plenty of great tips on how you can speed up your own WebGL applications so get your slot now. And for those of you can't make it in person it will be live streamed on Google Developers Live."

Sony PlayStation 4 Development Unit / PS4 Dev Kit is Unveiled

75w ago - Recently we reported on a Sony DUH-D1000AA PS4 Dev Kit FCC filing, and now Gizmodo (linked above) has made available a picture of what a PlayStation 4 development unit looks like.

Below are the details, to quote: "The cat may already be out of the bag, but for many months we didn't know what the PS4 looked like.

Now, we know what the retail version will look, but what about the developer box Sony hid during the big reveal and on Jimmy Fallon? Well, here's an exclusive image we've acquired of some developer boxes that were used at E3.

Like any PC you'd build yourself, the guts are what actually matter and in the case of game consoles, the developer units typically just hide final console design. They're never really that attractive, which is the exact opposite of what we'll be seeing this holiday season."


 

Sony PlayStation 4 / PS4 Orbis OS Development Details Surface

79w ago - Today some Sony PlayStation 4 / PS4 Orbis OS development details have surfaced from VGLeaks (linked above) as follows, to quote:

"We have some details about the development of the PlayStation 4 OS.

The Operating System is called "Orbis OS". It is a modified version of FreeBSD 9.0.

We aren't sure if this will bring again the "Other OS" functions to PlayStation 4 (remember that this option enabled PlayStation 3 to install other OS in the console like linux or windows).

When you boot up a second-gen development kit, you will be prompted with several options, as you can see in the next captures:

As you can imagine you have either a console mode or a graphic mode (the one you will see in a retail PlayStation 4).

86w ago - Ubisoft Community Developer Nik Schmidt shared a video today detailing PlayStation 4 development on Watch_Dogs for Sony's upcoming PS4 video game console.

To quote: Today we're pleased to debut a Watch_Dogs developer diary as part of PlayStation's "Conversations With Creators," an ongoing series that focuses on PS4 game development with some of the most accomplished game studios in the world.

In this video, you get to meet two of the driving forces in the Watch_Dogs dev team: Dominic, our senior producer and Jonathan, the creative director. Together, they discuss the vision of Watch_Dogs and ultimately, some of the development details for the PlayStation platforms.

94w ago - Today Gamasutra has revealed several Sony PlayStation 4 / PS4 development Tools and Engines for those interested in developing on the next-generation video game console with details below.

To quote: "It looks as if the NDAs for several tool-makers supporting Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 were lifted today, as our inboxes have been flooded this morning with announcements.

Below are the tools and engines that should be available now for those of you developing on the PlayStation 4. We'll update this story should any other announcements come our way.

Update: Added NVIDIA's PhysX and APEX, and NaturalMotion's Morpheme 4.

FaceFX

Animation tool FaceFX is billed as "an advanced facial animation solution unique in its ability to liberate artists from the complexities of creating realistic dialogue and emotive characters." Recent titles that used the tech include Far Cry 3, Halo 4 and Dishonored. More information is available here (facefx.com).

xaitControl

Germany's xaitment is supporting the PS4 with xaitControl, its AI software package for game logic and character behavioral modeling.
