Microsoft Exec Not Concerned About PS3 Slim nor PS3 Price Cuts

250°
262w ago - Microsoft's XBox Exec Chris Lewis has said that a PS3 Slim announcement or possible PS3 price drop from Sony at Gamescom next week won't affect its plans, which are now widely expected to include a price drop of their own.

He goes on to say the XBox 360 is in a good place as industry braces for a double price cut.

To quote: "We are in a good place in terms of the value we offer," the Xbox EMEA VP told MCV.

"We have a plan and a rhythm we are marching to - and we won't be knocked off that cadence in terms of what the opposition might do."

Sony is believed to be preparing to unveil its brand new PS3 Slim next Tuesday at the Gamescom show in Germany.

In addition, MCV has been led to believe that Microsoft will be countering Sony's move with a price cut of its own - most likely scrapping the Pro Xbox 360 SKU and dropping the Elite 360 by £60 to £169.99.

PS3 Supplies Running Dry, PS3 Price Cut and Slim Expected

262w ago - According to trade publication MCVUK (linked above), supplies of the PS3 are running dry in the UK channels.

This adds merit to rumors that the PS3 is going to get a price cut and also that the emergence of the PS3 Slim is imminent.

To quote: Rumors and speculation have been rife for many weeks now, but MCV can reveal that Sony is clearing PS3 hardware stock from the channel ahead of what is expected to be a new price point introduced from early September.

A press conference at the Gamescom event in Cologne next Tuesday (August 18th) is expected to provide details of the price cut - and possibly the launch of the rumoured redesigned PS3 Slim.

But ahead of that, UK retail has already begun to comment on the current lack of hardware stock on the market.

Two of the UK's leading national retailers have confirmed to MCV that they have been told not to expect any further supplies of the console until later this month or early September.

264w ago - According to Belgium site [Register or Login to view links], Sony has been briefing retailers of an imminent €100 (£85) price cut on the 80GB PS3.

The rumors follow the news that Sony is informing Japanese retailers that the 80GB PS3 model will not be shipping after August 8th, while Sony has cut the cost of its 160GB PlayStation 3 bundle from Amazon by $50.

To quote: "Sony are looking to make a big splash at GamesCom, so it we'll see big hardware and software news coming out of their Press Conference," said Associate Editor of PSM3, Andy Hartup.

"There's little doubt PS3 Slim will happen at some point - PSone and PS2 went through the same treatments - and GamesCom seems like a prime time to unveil it. I wouldn't bet against a PS3 Slim / Uncharted 2 bundle appearing this October."

Pachter: PS3 Price Cut by October if Console Sales Keep Crashing

267w ago - Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that Sony will cut PS3's price before October 1, 2009 if US hardware sales continue to slide.

Speaking in a note today, Pachter estimated that US Wii, 360 and PS3 sales will show a year-on-year decline of 43 percent for June.

To quote: "We think that the console manufacturers will therefore be forced to consider a price cut before year-end, with Sony cutting the PS3's price by October 1," he said.

"Further, we do not think that Nintendo's hardware forecast figures are achievable without a price cut, and we expect one around the same time as the PS3 price cut.

"It is likely both manufacturers will cut by $50, with Sony making up any lack of increased demand with a software bundle.

"We expect Microsoft to follow suit, giving us confidence that US software sales will grow later in the year, notwithstanding negative sales in the early part of the year."

Pachter predicted sales of 350,000 Wii, 225,000 Xbox 360 and 165,000 PS3 consoles in June today. The June NPD releases this Thursday.
