147w ago - About as exciting as recycling the PSN bypass blocked again news, today Engadget reports that Kevin Butler has inadvertently retweeted (now removed) the PS3 METLDR Root Key- specifically the HMAC Dongle Master Key that GeoHot first posted before Sony took legal action for hacking the PlayStation 3 console.
To quote: "Oh, honey. Sony PlayStation's (entirely fictional) Kevin Butler holds many (also fictional) positions within the company, but apparently none of them require him to keep up with (very real) news events. Travis La Marr (aka @exiva) tweeted the now-infamous PS3 METLDR root key towards Butler with the challenge to "Come at me."
What's a spokeperson to do but confuse it for a Battleship reference and retweet the entire code? Obviously someone let him in on the joke, as the tweet's since been removed. At least Sony won't have to subpoena for his info here. Geohot, we hope you're laughing."
153w ago - Update #2: GeoHot has now released GeoHot_1st.self (first signed PS3 homebrew on Firmware 3.55) and Lv2diag.self (also Lv2diag.elf in ELF format) stating the following: "...and this is a real self, hello world although it's not NPDRM, so it won't run off the hard drive. shouts to the guys who did PSL1GHT. without you, I couldn't release this. first piece of homebrew you can run, put in service mode, put on usb stick, boot."
Next up, Ifcaro has released PUPView BETA, to quote roughly translated: "PUPView is a GUI application used to view and extract the contents of the PUP update files for the PlayStation 3. At the moment it will only permit you to extract, but I also have plans to simplify the creation of new PUP files thanks to the new keys released "
In other PS3 hacking news today, KaKaRoToKs has released a PS3 PUP Packing Tool, a PS3 OFW to CFW Script and Fix_TAR...
156w ago - Update: According to several members (including jensen76, evilsperm, and sk group) when you downgrade a PS3 with the Modified 3.41 PUP (below), it currently cripples the Blu-ray player functionality. Some additional PS3 Blu-ray fix updates are outlined HERE, however, a more stable solution is still being worked on.
To quote from garyopa on one work-around: "I was able to restore one machine I had, by copying over all the files I had in the /dev_flash2 and /dev_flash3 back to the HDD, that I had saved before when it was on v3.41"
Forum member p666 also has expanded on the PS3 Blu-ray fix a bit HERE...
156w ago - Since the release of PS3 Firmware v3.55 there is no sense in keeping the master key a secret any more - it has been released, along with unencrypted payloads, and a promise to release the source-code by PS3YES for a free PSGrade PS3 downgrader.
