Sony on PS3 3D Gaming: 720p, but PlayStation 3 Can Do 1080p

209w ago - Over the weekend [Register or Login to view links] revealed that Sony is limiting use of 1080p 3D in PS3 games while opting for 720p, and today both PC World (linked above) and [Register or Login to view links] explain why Sony mandates 720p for PS3 3D while admitting the PlayStation 3 can do 3D 1080p.

Sony's Simon Benson confirmed that the PS3 can do 3D gaming in 1080p, but developers are generally encouraged to keep PS3 3D games at 720p due to frame rates and related issues that may arise with 1080p in PlayStation 3 3D gaming.

To quote: "3D exacerbates the issue, requiring the system process two discrete interlaced images--one for each eye--to fake depth perception.

In an undated tech presentation by a Sony engineer, the engineer admits "rendering two images from the same hardware may require compromises or limit the possibilities," citing performance ("the scene must be rendered twice"), VRAM usage ("the frame buffer may be larger in some cases"), and resolution limits ("more pixels may be processed") as mitigating factors in the list of technical considerations."

Sony Updates PSN Terms of Service to Reflect PS3 3D Gaming

210w ago - Just a few weeks back Sony revised their PSN Terms of Service for PlayStation Plus, and this weekend Examiner.com (linked above) reports that the PlayStation Network TOS have been updated once again to reflect PS3 3D gaming.

According to Forum user TheShroomster, Sony is also sending out the new Terms via e-mail for registered users to review.

To quote from Sony's [Register or Login to view links] on the change:

"Some people may experience discomfort (such as eye strain, eye fatigue or nausea) while watching 3D video images or playing stereoscopic 3D games on 3D televisions. If you experience such discomfort, you should immediately discontinue use of your television until the discomfort subsides.

SCEA recommends that all viewers take regular breaks while watching 3D video or playing stereoscopic 3D games. The length and frequency of necessary breaks may vary from person to person. Please take breaks that are long enough...
 

Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Officially Hits PlayStation 3 Tomorrow

To quote: Starting tomorrow, high-definition stereoscopic 3D gaming will be available in your very own living rooms! As you already know, all PlayStation 3 systems are already equipped with everything they need to play stereoscopic 3D games.

To quote: The fitness controller is described as such:

"The present invention embodiments promote performance of exercise by users during a computer simulation or game. An embodiment of the present invention includes an exercise device with a plurality of effector or gripping members in the form of handles to be manipulated by a user.

A coil steel spring provides the resistance for the handles that may be compressed together or pulled apart for resistance-based exercise. The device further includes additional input devices to interact with a simulation or gaming scenario.
