Sony Offers Harmonix History Lesson: The Origins of Amplitude

50°
15w ago - Sony Product Manager Annette Gonzalez offered fans a Harmonix history lesson today outlining the origins of Amplitude.

To quote: It all began with a geometrical sketch on a white board.

Imagine if you had an octogonal tunnel covered in data. Musical data. Represented over time and space. The player controls a futuristic cyber ship floating through a three-dimensional wireframe.

Notes representing particular sounds from a song are represented across multiple tracks in gems. Beatmatching along these tracks and blasting away the gems releases these sounds, allowing the player to weave in various elements of the song and make music.

This would eventually become what we now know as FreQuency, the 2001 rhythm-action title released on PlayStation 2.

FreQuency made strides in innovation with its addictive, fast-paced, and undoubtedly challenging beatmatching gameplay (both single and multiplayer). FreQuency was also one of the first games to support the PS2 Network Adapter.

Though a title loved by fans, FreQuency didn't quite sell.

"When FreQuency shipped we thought it was going to be huge," said Greg LoPiccolo, Chief...

Completing Face-offs and Challenges in DRIVECLUB represent more than just a way to score FAME. They give you another reason to race aside from just coming in first.

Slightly Mad Studios Offers a First Look at Project CARS on PS4

100°
18w ago - Today Creative Director Andy Tudor at Slightly Mad Studios offers a first look at their project CARS on PS4 with details below.

To quote: If you haven't heard about it already, Project CARS is a bit different. Different in the philosophy of freedom that runs throughout the entire game, and different in how it's being created - by YOU, the gamers!

Project CARS was conceived back in October 2011 (Wow, time flies!) as a natural continuation of our work on two of racing's biggest franchises - Need For Speed and Test Drive - and as a return to our roots when we created GTR and GT Legends.

Back when we were conceiving the idea, we knew we wanted to create a racing game that covered a wide range of different car types and motorsports, and gave you the freedom to play and experiment with them however you wanted.

We wanted the core driving experience to be the most authentic on the planet, and we wanted to provide you with all the features you need to recreate a race weekend as it happens in real life - complete with a dynamic time of day and a weather system that not only looks beautiful but challenges your skills and provides strategic opportunities.

And we wanted to connect players together with a variety of online and community features - time trials, events,...

Sony Offers a Preview of May 2014's Instant Game Collection

100°
19w ago - Sony Senior Community Specialist Kristine Steimer offered a preview today of May 2014's Instant Game Collection with details below.

To quote: Next month PlayStation Plus members will receive several games as part of their membership including Stick it to the Man! on PS4, Puppeteer, PES 2014 and Skullgirls Encore on PlayStation 3, and Limbo and Surge Deluxe on PS Vita. Several of these titles are a visual treat, boasting distinct, vibrant art styles.

Stick it to the Man! is a mix of point and click adventure puzzles plus a bit of platforming, and the animation-inspired art style is really slick. You'll solve problems as Ray, a regular guy who wakes up one day with a giant pink hand floating out of his head. This pink hand gives him the ability to read people's minds and grab stickers from their thoughts to use in the world.

On PS3 members will receive three very different titles: the award-winning, uber-charming platformer Puppeteer, the popular soccer simulator Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 and the indie-darling fighter with a crazy roster, Skullgirls Encore. Puppeteer is a visual treat that follows the story of a boy named Kutaro who gets turned into a puppet by the evil Moon Bear King (great name) and loses his head.

After the transformation Kutaro must borrow other heads...
