114w ago - This weekend PlayStation 3 hacker Graf Chokolo has disabled the PS3 internal HDD encryption, opening the door to possibilities such as dual-boot PS3 Firmware and using the decrypted PS3 HDD in another console.
To quote: Even without having a PS3 to work with, graf_chokolo is really active in distributing updates and fixes to his PS3 Linux gits. The latest one comes with an interesting update as you can see from his post below. Maybe one step further to a dual boot PS3 FW?
Guys, take a look at "ps3dm_sm set_del_def_encdec_key" command. You can disable/enable virtual FLASH/internal HDD encryption with that And by patching HV process 9 (which sets ATA keys before loading GameOS) you can disable it permanently. It means you could swap your internal HDD and use it on another PS3. But you have to restore the content on it after disabling encryption because all data will be encrypted of course.
Soon i will implement ENCDEC device driver for PS3 Linux and you will be able to experiment with ATA encryption. ENCDEC device is responsible...
121w ago - Update: Sony has now done as expected and reissued the PS3 Firmware 3.56 update. More details to come as they are available (PUP SHA1/MD5 hash comparison HERE) on whether it remedies the PlayStation 3 HDD upgrade issues or not.
Some may recall Sony quietly reissued PS3 Firmware 3.41 to rectify issues for PlayStation 3 HDD upgraders, and today Examiner.com (linked above) reports the same remedy may be necessary in the recently released PS3 Firmware 3.56.

128w ago - Here is my WIP project on PS2 HDD support and discless ELF launching from the PS3 XMB. First off I'd like to thank w1zard0f07 for being able to at least try helping me out with this one.
Over the last month or so I have been working on a little trick for the Phat Model PS3s. In summary FFXI is PS2 title that requires PS2 HDD support which is added via this pkg ([NPIA00001] PS2 System Files).
From there a "PS2 partition is made", which translates to an IMAGE.DAT file being made to exactly 12GB (according to GameOS/FTP this file is 0kb large)
The contents of this HDD is listed in the attached "Blank PS2 HDD.txt" (The partition list is corrupted according to w1zard0f07, quote "APA partition table on your dump file is broken")
The XMB icon is not launchable by this point, and requires the PlayOnline Viewer to be installed. This undergoes a certificate process, and then continues to install PlayOnline viewer to the "PS2 HDD." It is after this point the XMB icon is launchable, and goes straight into the PS2 mode reading from PP.SCUS-97269.1000.POLVIEWER and launching...
131w ago - We've seen the GT5 unboxing with some Gran Turismo 5 Signature Edition pictures, and today GamersMint.com (linked above) confirms via amar212 at GTPlanet.net that Gran Turismo 5 has an optional 40-minute 6.4GB PS3 HDD installation with the US game being reported as 19.4GB (20,882,698,502 bytes) with the EU version coming in at 13.72GB in size.
To quote: "The initial install size of Gran Turismo 5 on your PS3 HDD is going to be 6.4 GB. He also revealed that it takes about 40 minutes to install.
However, interestingly, he says that the game will continue to install and decompress data throughout the course of your playtime and the actual disk space taken by the game on your PS3 will be a lot more.
Kindly note that this installation is optional and you can play the game without doing this. It only requires 256 MB of your HDD if you decide against doing it but it's highly...
