EA and Crytek announce Crysis Warhead, Parallel story to Crysis

306w ago - EA and Crytek today announced Crysis Warhead, the Parallel story to Crysis. Shipping exclusively for the PC this fall, Crysis Warhead is the first title to be developed at Crytek¬'s Budapest studio, and is built on a new, enhanced and optimized version of Crytek's CryENGINE 2 technology.

Crytek to Premier CryEngine 2 on the PS3 At GDC 2008

325w ago - Frankfurt-based developer Crytek (Far Cry, Crysis) has announced that it will be making the debut of a cross-platform version of its CryEngine 2 at this year's GDC, with a demonstration version running on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Crytek first debuted CryEngine 2 technology at the 2007 GDC, later releasing Crysis with Electronic Arts, the first title to utilize the engine. This year, Crytek is taking appointments to see the console versions of the engine.

Crytek will also be doing public demonstrations showing how its notoriously spec-heavy technology can be run on "a budget PC which can be put together for around 600 dollars complete, including keyboard and mouse," as well as demonstrations with licensees, including architectural and serious games companies.

The company notes that anyone wishing to make an appointment for a cross platform demonstration can do so by emailing gdc2008@crytek.com with details of their own company, or by visiting the developer's GDC show floor booth.
 

CryENGINE2's monstruous power: maps 458 times bigger than Earth's surface

326w ago - Yeah, we all know how truly amazing Crytek's engine is and how tormenting it becomes even for Quad Cores and 8800 Ultras, but just wait till you see what huge maps this baby can render!

When Crytek said that Crysis is "future proof" they really meant what they said... And if you ever wondered why your insanely high-end computer kneels and bows before the 1+ million lines of code, 1GB of textures and 85,000 shaders that the game currently packs, well just read this: the absolute maximum size of a map in Crysis can reach the mind-boggling value of 68,719,476,736 square kilometers!!!!!

Yeah, that's more than 68.7 billion... And you know what? Earth's entire surface "barely" reaches 150,000,000 square kilometers, so with Crytek's SandBox editor one can theoretically create a map approximately 458 times bigger than the area of Earth...

That means that if you want to have like... our planet's entire population playing Crysis simultaneously on multiplayer, a single player would have to walk around 10 square kilometers to meet its next opponent on that huge map...

Now THAT is what I call future proof... But I just wonder, what kind of super-computer, super-server-cluster monstrosity would render even half of that huge map?...
